Athlete Information 2006-2007
New this year, the Peterborough Junior Badminton Club will be offering two programs. Both programs will teach fundamental badminton shots, footwork, strategy, fitness, sportsmanship, and team skills. The programs have been developed after consultation with former and current players, and are designed to fit within our time and gym space constraints. The two programs will have a different structure, but are not exclusive from each other. The programs will be flexible to meet the needs of players and parents.
1. The Peterborough Junior Club
Duration of Program:
Fridays at Thomas A. Stewart S.S. – 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
September 15, 2006 to April 20, 2007
Membership Fee:
$50 club fee per player or $135 club fee for three or more children per family. Membership includes gym rental and nylon shuttlecocks.
Equipment needed:
- Athletes must provide their own racquets for practice and play. The Club can supply a limited number of racquets only if necessary and not on a permanent basis. Please see coaches for recommendation per player if needed.
- New this year, all athletes must wear ASTM F803 approved safety eyewear by January 1, 2007 for all practice and play in club. This policy is effective immediately for all outside tournaments. The Peterborough Club will offer appropriate eyewear at a reasonable price directly from the manufacturer if possible.
- All shuttlecocks will be provided for all practice and in-club tournaments as a part of the membership fee. Yonex Maxis 350 birds may be purchased from the club if needed, for personal play or practice at a price of $14.00 for ½ dozen, which is below retail cost.
- All athletes are expected to wear appropriate court shoes for all club activities and tournaments. Coaching staff can provide information about suitable shoes for parents.
- A club t-shirt to be worn to external COBA tournaments may be purchased for approximately $25.00.
- If the player decides to play in tournaments outside of regular club play, they will be expected to purchase an Ontario Badminton Association (OBA) competition card for $25.00 (once a year).
Peterborough Junior Badminton Club Program Details
-This section of Peterborough Junior club is geared towards a full complement of players from beginner to competitive ranging from 8 - 20 years old as of September 1, 2006.Returning athletes will be given preference, but all athletes will be accepted if space permits. The maximum number in this club is 80 players.
-Athletes may be eligible to transfer to the Junior Team program anytime during the year. An extra $60 fee will apply.Transfer will be based on player, coach, and parent consultation. Program can be specialized for athletes with specific school related or work activities.These allowances will only be made through consultation with the player, coach, and parent.
-Athletes in this section of the Club will be asked to compete in the Year-end Club tourney, and could compete in the Central Ontario District events listed below.Tourney entry fees, OBA Competition Card fees, and transportation charges are not included in the club fee.
-The focus for athletes will be to develop fundamental skills of the sport of badminton through play and coaching.
-Coaching is provided free of charge under Eric Ingram (NCCP level 1 Badminton coach) and Assistant Coach Lionel Ownsworth (NCCP level II)
Possible Events for Club Athletes
-Peterborough Junior club year-end tournament for all ages will be held in the last six weeks of the season and is free of charge to all members. This tourney allows players to develop in a fun, competitive tournament against players they have trained with all year.
-Athletes may enter COBA events, but players will not be allowed to enter an event without parent and coach approval. Coaching at these events will be free of charge. These tournaments will allow players to improve their skills in a competitive tournament against players their own age from different clubs.
-Transportation by bus may be provided if numbers permit at a fee approx. $10-25 depending on number of participating athletes. A car-pooling system may be called upon in times where numbers do not justify the expense of a bus. Parents are encouraged to talk to coaching staff about willingness to volunteer for any aspect of club activities.
-Cost of each of these external events varies between $25 and $35 per player plus travel and food costs.

How to Join the Club
Bring your application form containing your fees, membership and parental consent form to the first night of regular practice, Friday October 6th, 2006.

September 29, 2006 to April 20, 2007
Membership Fee
$110 team membership made payable to Peterborough Badminton Club
- includes Ontario Badminton Association Competition Card
- One team T-shirt, to be worn at all competitions that the team enters.
Equipment Needed

5.All athletes are expected to wear appropriate court shoes for all training and tournaments-a list of appropriate shoes can be obtained from the coaching staff.
Peterborough Junior Badminton Team Program Details
-This section of Peterborough Junior team is geared towards players from intermediate to competitive with an age range between 14-20 years as of September 2006.Athletes returning to the team will be given preference, however all athletes will be accepted if space permits.The maximum number of players in this section is 32 players.
-Programs can be customized for athletes with specific school related or work activities that may conflict with the program.These allowances will only be made through consultation between player, coach and parent.
-Athletes in this section of the team will be asked to compete in the Year-end in-club tourney, and should compete in as many as possible of the Central Ontario District events listed below.Entry fees and transportation charges to these external tournaments are not included in the team fee.
-The focus for athletes will be to develop technical skills of the sport of badminton through play, team building, fitness training, sportsmanship, and coaching.
-Coaching is provided free of charge under Eric Ingram, NCCP level I Badminton coach.
Possible Events for Team Athletes
-An in-club year-end tournament for all ages will be held in the last six weeks of the season and is free of charge to all members. This would allow players to develop in a fun competitive tournament against players they have trained with all year.
-COBA events should be entered, but players will not be allowed to enter an event without parent and coach approval. Coaching at these events will be free of charge.These tournaments will allow players to improve their skills in a competitive tournament against players their own age from different clubs.The level of participation in the recommended tournaments is optional but the players on the team will be encouraged to attend at least three of the listed external COBA events.

March 17-19: COBA Championships (singles doubles and mixed three day event at the end of March break)
March 31: Lindsay Funfest (for selected athletes with limited numbers)
