Contact number:

Email address: [note: make sure it is not obscene or silly – first impressions count]

Date of Birth / current age: [*see note at end]

Objective: [a brief statement of what you are looking for. Change according to the role you are applying for and make sure you consider what the employer wants to hear – not just what you want]

e.g. I am looking to gain my first employment with a quality company that will enable me to obtain casual or part time work whilst at school and hopefully I will have proven myself to be kept on through my university studies [or TAFE etc.. or keep me on after I finish school – whatever works for you]. I believe [your company] would look good on my resume [if you can put a good reason here e.g. because I want to be a chef] and I promise to work hard in order to reinforce the company’s good reputation and obtain a good reference.

[optional] Availability:

Ideally I am seeking X number of hours per week, and would make myself available for X number days during the school week and both days on the weekend. I would be able to extend this during school holiday periods and public holidays. [Note: optional and probably only worth noting if you are fairly available – if you can only do 2 hours every second week that might not be helpful to say]

Education: [highest school level you have attended or are attending and the year]

e.g Brisbane Boy’s Grammar Finishing Year 11 in 2015 and attending Year 12 in 2016

You might wish to list certain subjects and your grades IF they are either of significance to the role or show a level of excellence (e.g. you get an A in chemistry regardless of whether relevant looks good). Another example: you might include a school based apprenticeship in hospitality if you are applying for a restaurant job, or English marks if you seeking a role in a bookstore. Include all, some or none as long as you think the employer might be interested.

e.g.

MathematicsA-

EnglishA+

Social ScienceB

Computer studiesA

Academic awards:

e.g.

  • Dux of school / year
  • First in Biology
  • Distinction in National Science competition
  • Senior leader in Music class

School and community awards:

e.g.

  • 100% attendance Yrs 9, 10 & 11
  • Certificate of merit for Volunteering at aged care
  • School Prefect 2015

Sporting achievements:

e.g.

  • Made first XV in School Rugby team
  • Voted sporting vice-captain two years in a row
  • Won best and fairest award twice out of four years
  • Triathlons in my spare time

NOTE: You don’t have to list everything and be careful about listing too many sporting or external activities. Your employer wants to know that you have time for them. If you are not a sporting person – feel free to delete or edit for something else. You could also substitute this with volunteer work or music achievements etc if you have a special interest – Especially if it relates to your employment (e.g. music concerts if you are applying at a music store).

More notes…

*Date of Birth – do you include? My answer is:– if you think it will help. It is not necessary, but many companies have to ensure you are old enough to work to comply with government laws or to obey corporate hiring policy - like being over 18 to sell alcohol. Sometimes parents don’t like you giving out too much information so you can always say “turned 15 in August 2015”, or “turning 16 next May” etc. I like to make it easy for employers by putting DOB and then saying current age. But remember you don’t have to put it on there.

Penultimate note: This document is assuming you don’t already have any work experience. If you do have prior work experience put in either before the education section or immediately after (and before awards).

Final note: Remember to take out all the comments / notes / “[optional]” / e.g. etc… and feel free to change colours / spacing / font etc… and add in sections if you want. It is your CV and should feel like you. But keep it professional and picture free – unless you are going for an artistic job and you think it will help [usually doesn’t though].
