Stream of consciousness writing prompts

Stream of consciousness-is a writing technique in which a person writes continuously for a set period of time without regard to spelling, grammar or topic. It produces raw, often unusable material, but allows a writer to overcome blocks of apathy and self-criticism. It is used mainly by prose writers and writing teachers. This technique is also used by some writers to collect their initial thoughts and ideas on a topic, and is often used as a preliminary to more formal writing.

Write on several of the following prompts. Your writings can be Lists, prose, poems, thoughts, memories…etc.

  • Write about your earliest childhood memory. Recall vivid senses such as feelings, smells, sights, sounds….
  • List all the places you have lived.
  • List what you keep in your backpack or purse and how it defines you.
  • What style of clothing do you like best and how do you think it shows who you are as a person?
  • Write about a dream you have had recently.
  • Write about something that frightens you.
  • Write about your family or one person you look up to in your family.
  • Write about a hero and why they are your hero. What qualities do they have and how might you be more like them?
  • List your favorite possessions.
  • What do you want to be when you grow up? What kind of person do you hope to be?
  • Write about someone who helped you or influenced your life greatly for the better.
  • List things (or people) you have lost.
  • List your favorite sounds.
  • Write about a sister or brother.
  • Write about something you did that you regret.
  • What if you could go back in time?
  • Think of your favorite place. What do you like about this place?
  • What do you do there? How does it look, smell, and feel?
  • Friends sometimes experience conflicts. Explain why this happens.
  • Your generation faces many problems. Identify one of these problems

that you feel is the most important, explain it, and propose some

possible solutions to the problem.

  • Write about a pet.

WRITING TIPS-

Write what comes to your mind as you are thinking. Don’t worry about spelling and grammar;don’t censor your deep feelings, use describing words that are vivid and meaningful (rather than NICE or Beautiful). Avoid simple words that do not paint a picture. Be specific. Focus on your 5 senses you remember---what did you see, smell, touch, taste, hear, feel?

Try using a Symolie : My fear was like a shaking leaf, the sun was like a vibrant orange….

Try using a Metaphor: I was on fire with anger. The moon is an iridescent pearl….
