About this booklet
/ This booklet will tell you what Havering wants to do to help people get good eye care and support.
It will tell you what the Council wants to happen by 2016.
/ The number of people in Havering who have problems with their eyes (sight) is rising.
There are lots of reasons for this increase. One of the reasons is that there are more older people living in Havering now.
There are also more people who have:
·  Higher blood pressure
·  Diabetes
·  Stroke.
These people are more likely to have problems with their eyes.
/ Some of the things that can also cause poor sight are:
·  Smoking
·  Being overweight
·  Drinking alcohol.
People with learning disabilities
/ In Havering, we know that there are a lot of people with learning disabilities who also have problems with their sight.
/ This number is expected to rise over the next few years.
/ Many people with learning disabilities do not have regular eye tests.
/ This means that there may be lots more people who have problems with their eyes than we know about.
1.  We want to help everyone to take good care of their eyes
To do this we will work to help:
/ ·  People learn how to look after their eyes
·  People to know why looking after their eyesight is important
/ ·  People like doctors and carers think about eye-care and support.
2.  What we want to work on to help people take good care of their eyes
We want to:
/ ·  give people the best eye-care to help them live independently
·  make sure people know what good eye health means
/ ·  help people spot any problems with their eyes as soon as possible
·  make sure that everyone can access an optometrist (an eye specialist). See a list with eye specialist at the bottom of the document.
/ ·  set up an eye health service in Havering for people with learning disabilities.
3.  How will we make this happen?
We will:
/ ·  ensure that the Vision Plan is part of all other local planning groups
/ ·  arrange events to let people know what things can cause poor sight
/ ·  increase the number of eye checks for people most at risk of eye problems or sight loss
/ ·  collect information on people’s eye health so we know what services are needed in the future
·  make sure there is a register of all services so that people know where to go for advice or eye check
/ ·  make sure that people can access leisure and education centres
/ ·  make sure that organisations have policies in place to help people into work and training
·  help people understand their health needs and make wise choices
/ ·  give people clear and easy to understand information
/ ·  look at how public transport can be improved for people with eye problems or sight loss
/ ·  make sure that children`s needs are included in all plans
/ ·  make sure that young people with diabetes and their parents are aware of the effects of their diet and ways of living

/ ·  make sure that young people and their parents and carers know what to do when moving into adult services
·  make sure that the needs of people with sight problems and other conditions are included
/ ·  listen to what people think about our services
·  make sure that parents and carers are not left out
