Applications are invited for the above posts within General Medicine based in Inverclyde Royal Hospital, Greenock. Candidates should be in possession of the MRCP (UK) or equivalent and have appropriate experience in General Medicine.

The successful candidate will participate in acute medical receiving and also form part of the General Medical team looking after Wards and attending Out-patient clinics.

Rheumatology Services within Clyde provide outpatient services at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Inverclyde Royal Hospital, and the Vale of Leven Hospital. While inpatients are managed in the general medical wards of the Royal Alexandra and Inverclyde Royal Hospitals under the care of the Consultant Rheumatologists.

There is an established rheumatology team within Clyde comprising of 6 Consultant rheumatologists, 1 Specialty Doctor, rheumatology nurse specialists / auxiliary nurse, extended role physiotherapist and a dedicated occupational therapy service.

These posts hold educational approval from the Postgraduate Dean and will be Locum Appointments for Training. If appointed as a Clinical Fellow the post will not be recognised for Training.

To practice medicine in the UK you need to hold both GMC registration and a licence to practise.

Job Description

Introduction
Living and Working in Greenock

Inverclyde Royal Hospital is a modern district general hospital in Greenock, serving the population of Inverclyde, Largs, Fairlie, Skermorlie, Wemyss Bay, Bute and the Cowal Peninsula. A total population of approximately 140,000 comprising both urban and rural populations. The hospital was opened in 1979 and currently has 239 beds.

All major specialties are represented within the Hospital. There are close clinical links with the Community Health Care Partnership, the other acute hospitals within Greater Glasgow and Clyde, and the University Hospitals in Glasgow.

Greenock is situated on the West Coast of Scotland about 40 minutes from Glasgow, amid superb coastal and mountain scenery, and with excellent transport links. The area offers excellent residential accommodation and first class state and private schools.

The local district has excellent facilities for most sports including golf, swimming, rugby, cricket and tennis. In addition to the sports and swimming / leisure centres, there are great opportunities for those who are interested in sailing, as some of the best sailing in the world can be found in the Clyde estuaries. Largs Yachting Marina lies 12 miles to the south, offering RYS sail training courses

There area also major shopping centres in Silverburn and Braehead which are within reach, and one of Europe’s premier shopping cities is about 25 miles away.

There is a good transport infrastructure with rail, bus and motorway links as well as close proximity to 2 international airports; Glasgow International Airport and Glasgow Prestwick International Airport.

Acute Services Division, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde

The Acute Division of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is the largest group of adult acute hospitals in Scotland, offering many opportunities to ensure job satisfaction and career development.

We provide a wide range of services from community-based care through to the full range of general hospital services.

There is a significant amount of complex surgical work carried out, as we are home to a number of the country’s tertiary and national services including heart and renal transplantation and cardiothoracic surgery.

The Work of the Department

The Medical Directorate in Inverclyde Royal Hospital has 116 beds. There are 10 Consultant Physicians, with the following interests;- Cardiology (3), Gastro-enterology (1), Respiratory Medicine (2), Diabetes/Endocrinology (3), Rheumatology (4).

The Consultant Physicians at Inverclyde Royal Hospital provide integrated outpatient, inpatient and day case investigation services for the population. Both out-patient and in-patient duties are supported by the Allied Health Professions and multi-disciplinary working is a key feature of both services.

The Rheumatology Services within Clyde provide outpatient services at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, Inverclyde Royal Hospital, and the Vale of Leven Hospital. While inpatients are managed in the general medical wards of the Royal Alexandra and Inverclyde Royal Hospitals under the care of the Consultant Rheumatologists.

There is an established rheumatology team comprising of six Consultant Rheumatologists, one Speciality Doctors, rheumatology nurse specialists / auxiliary nurse, extended role physiotherapist and a dedicated occupational therapy service.

Outpatient physiotherapy (including hydrotherapy) and occupational therapy is provided in both hospitals. A biological therapy database is in place, in addition to day ward facilities and a patient help line.

There are dedicated clinics for Early Rheumatoid arthritis. Ankylosing Spondylitis, Psoriatic Connective Tissue Disease, Osteoporosis, take place within the Outpatient Department, while Biological Therapies and Joint Injection Clinics are provided in the rheumatology day units.

Inpatients are managed in the general medical wards under the care of Drs Hutton, Roberts, Connell and Campbell. Hospital. Inverclyde Royal Hospital has regular departmental meetings, in addition to a Postgraduate Medical Education programme.

(c ) Duties of the Post:

This post is based over a 6 month month period until the 1st August 2018. The exact attachments and their duration may be tailored to suit the training needs and previous experience of the postholder. The postholder will participate in acute medical receiving and also form part of the General Medical team looking after Wards and attending Out-patient clinics.

(i) Acute Medical Services

Acute Medicine

The Consultants at Inverclyde Royal Hospital undertake general medical receiving on on-call rota 1:13 for weekdays and 1:6.5 for weekends

Each consultant is on-call for emergency admissions for a 24 hours period -commencing at 1pm and finishing at 1pm the following day. There is Consultant presence in receiving unit from 9am until 8pm 7 days per week. Friday – Sunday periods. During the week of on-call the number of emergency patients between 9 am and 9 pm is seasonal and can vary between 10 to 30 per day, with an average of 25 patients admitted.

The Medical Directorate works well as a team and actively encourages co-operation between colleagues to allow flexibility in fulfilling service responsibilities.

The Clinical Director for Medicine across the Clyde Division is Dr Lisa Hutton, based at the Inverclyde Royal Hospital. The Lead Clinician is Dr Louise Osborne based at Inverclyde Royal Hospital.

Junior Doctors Out-of-Hours

The post holder will be required to participate in the Middle Grade out of hours rota, which includes long days, weekend working and night duty, as well as working within the Acute Receiving ward.

A Hospital at Night service commenced in August 2006, and medical staff covering the out of hours period are required to lead and participate in this team, as well as attending the hand over. This is part of a wider work assessing the impact of modernizing Medical Careers and implementing plans to support the delivery of high quality sustainable services across Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

(ii) Teaching

Undergraduates attend throughout their training and the new curriculum will involve a commitment both to supervise students in clinics and bed-side teaching.

(iii) Research

You will be expected to take part in ongoing audit and research activities in the General Medicine department, and will be encouraged and supported in any of your own projects.

In addition to the duties mentioned above, duties at other hospitals administered by NHS Glasgow may be necessary.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE

The conditions of service are those laid down and amended from time to time by the Hospital and Medical & Dental Whitley Council.

- If appointed as an StR (Locum Appointment for Training) the salary range will be: £31,220 to £49,091 per annum (pro rata)
- If appointed as a Clinical Fellow the salary range will be: £31,220 to £41,305 per annum (pro rata)
New Entrants to the NHS will normally commence on the minimum point of the salary scale, (dependent on qualifications and experience). Salary is paid monthly by Bank Credit Transfer.
HOURS OF DUTY / Full Time 40.00
SUPERANNUATION / New entrants to NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde who are aged sixteen but under seventy five will be enrolled automatically into membership of the NHS Pension Scheme. Should you choose to "opt out" arrangements can be made to do this via: www.sppa.gov.uk
REMOVAL EXPENSES / Assistance with removal and associated expenses may be given and would be discussed and agreed prior to appointment.
