Storyteller Jon Spelman Takes Weinberg Stage for Family and Adult Performances

FREDERICK, Md., Tuesday, January 17,2017—Heralded by The Washington Post as “a stunning wordsmith and riveting performer,” storyteller Jon Spelman is set to offer two unique performances at the Weinberg Center for the Arts. On February 10 at 8:00pm, Spelman will present Facing the Bull, the true tale of his journey with cancer. Juxtaposing fear, resilience, and fragility with the robust joy of being alive, Facing the Bull is recommended for audiences aged 13 and above.

On February 11 at 1:00pm, Spelman will weave enchanting tall tales for audiences of all ages as part of the Weinberg Center’s Family Series.Free children’s books will be distributed prior to the performance of Jon Spelman: Family Tales courtesy of Wonder Book and Video.

Tickets for Facing the Bull begin at $17 and tickets for Family Tales begin at $10.Ticketsmay be purchased online at WeinbergCenter.org, by calling the Box Office at 301.600.2828, or in person at 20 West Patrick St. Discounts are available for students, children, military, and seniors.

Jon Spelman’s performing, writing, and teaching have been supported by individual grants from The National Endowment for the Arts, The Maryland Arts Council, the Arts Councils of Florida and The District of Columbia, the City of Baltimore, and the Baltimore Community Foundation. He has been a Creative Artist in Residence at the Blue Mountain Center in upstate New York, at the Hermitage Artist Retreat in Florida, and at the Bellagio Center of The Rockefeller Foundation, on Italy's Lake Como. He has performed on National Public Radio, is featured on five home videos and four audio collections, and is a recipient of a Parents’ Choice Gold Award. Spelman has received three Emmy® awards, presented by the Washington Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, for "Three Stories Tall," which he hosted for six years on NBC4-TV in Washington, D.C. He has also been honored with a Children’s Radio Award and an Achievement in Children’s Television Award. He has six times been a Featured Teller at the American National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, Tenn. In addition to performing and teaching, Spelman offers workshops and residencies through both the Arts Coaches and the Touring Programs of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
