Story GraphsMath/Grade 8

Story Graphs

Tier I – Creating stories or graphs

1.)Carlos lives in a large city and travels to school on a local bus that stops every block to let passengers on and off. Sketch a graph that shows the relationship between the distance the bus has traveled over time. Include graph and axes titles.

2.)Jacob completed a 1-mile race in 7 minutes. The graph shows his distance over time. Write a brief story about Jacob’s race based on the shape of the graph.

Tier II – Creating stories and graphs

Choose any 2 of the following situations. Write a brief story (3-5 sentences) that describes the chosen situation. Sketch a graph that corresponds with the situation. Be sure to label the axes with the appropriate variables and include a graph title. Details of the story must be apparent in the graph.

  • Your hunger, happiness, activity, or tiredness over the course of a school day.
  • The number of texts you send (or receive) throughout a weekday or weekend day (indicate on your graph).
  • The noise in the hallway during a school day.
  • Distance walked during a period in the day (define what part of the day).
  • Speed at which you move during a period of a day (define what part of the day).
  • Create your own situation.

Tier III – Multiple Interpretations of the same situation

1.)Sara walks from her home to the store. Halfway to the store, she realizes that she forgot to bring money, so she turns around, returns home, gets her money, and then walks all the way to the store.

Graphs:

a.)Each of the above graphs could be used to describe Sara’s trip. What variables would need to be added to the graph so they match the story? Explain your reasoning.

b.)Create a third graph with a different pair of variables that could be used to describe the same situation.

2.)Sean was taking his time getting to the bus stop walking a slow steady pace. He then realized that he was going to be late and increased his speed to a constant jog. He waited for a few minutes at the bus stop before it arrived. He then took the bus to school.

a.)Sketch a graph that could be used to describe Sean’s travel to school. Make sure to include graph and axes titles.

b.)Sketch another story graph that uses a different pair of variables that could also be used to describe this story. Make sure to include graph and axes titles.

c.)Compare and contrast the graphs that you made.
