Target Audience:

The intended audience for this conference are physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, advance practice nurses, pharmacists, social work and ancillary team members.

Conference description:

This 14th Annual HIV in West Virginia Conference intends to inform healthcare professionals on issues relative to the opioid epidemic in West Virginia and the relationship to HIV. The conference offers a dynamic course agenda with expert faculty, speaking on clinically and socially relevant issues: infectious complications observed in IV drug users, the current state of harm reduction in West Virginia, the intersection of domestic violence and substance use, burnout among first responders, how adverse childhood events are a risk for HIV acquisition and an update on the HIV investigation in West Virginia.

Objectives:

At the end of this program, participants should be able to:

1. Recognize viral, bacterial, and fungal complications of injection drug use.

2. Identify the intersection between trauma, intimate partner violence, substance use and their connections with a person’s risk for acquisition of HIV infection.

3. Explain the legislative challenges, policy issues, funding concerns and new harm reduction initiatives needed in West Virginia in order to reduce the incidence of new HCV and HIV infections.

4. List the common signs and symptoms that have been associated with first responder PTSD or burnout.

5. Define adverse childhood experiences and the linkage to risky health behaviors, chronic health conditions and early death.

6. Discuss the health disparities, human behaviors and other elements that influenced this current HIV outbreak in fifteen identified southern West Virginia counties.
