Location

The main physical base of CentreLGS is at KentLawSchool, University of Kent. The University of Kent is a campus university, on the outskirts of Canterbury - a beautiful old city, with restaurants and shopping facilities about 55 miles from London. The University is also close to the KentCoast, which houses the well-known fishing town of Whitstable. Regular buses (no 4 and 6) go to/from the campus to either town.

The Conference registration desk is in the foyer of the Senate, the hexagonal building centrally located on campus.

Kent Law School is in Eliot College Extension, seminar room 9 is on the first floor.

CentreLGS is located on the ground floor of EliotCollege. When facing EliotCollege main entrance, go down the stairs to your left (see the sign for the Centre). Turn right at the bottom of the stairs and our main entrance is on your right.

Travel

Travel by train

There are two train routes from London:

1) LondonVictoria to Canterbury East: Journey time approx 1 hour and 25 minutes. Two trains per hour on Mondays to Saturdays until 9 pm. One train per hour after 9 pm and Sundays. From here a taxi to the campus will cost approx. £11.00. Alternatively, follow the path from the train station via the City Walls to the Bus Station (10 min walk). There is a half hourly bus no 4 from here to the University campus (check with the driver as not all no 4 buses enter the campus!).

2) London Charing Cross, London Waterloo East, or LondonBridge to Canterbury West: Journey time approx 1 hour and 35 minutes. Monday to Friday: usually direct hourly service (some require a change in Ashford) through most of the day. From there a taxi to the campus will cost approx. £6.00. Alternatively, take bus no 4 to the campus: turn right out of train station, walk to main road, bus stop is on far side, approx 50 metres to left.

Bus no 6 takes you back to either train station in Canterbury.

Train fares: tickets can be bought on the day of travel. A single or return both cost approximately £20.00 - £25.00.

Travel by car and parking

Canterbury campus visitors’ car park is on Giles Lane. This is a ‘Pay and Display’ car park. Parking elsewhere is restricted. Parking permits will be available at the registration desk at the conference.

International Travel
Eurostar trains arrive from Paris and Brussels in Ashford, which is a 10 minute train journey away from Canterbury West.

The nearest airport is London Gatwick: from there you can travel via London London Victoria to Canterbury by train. From London Heathrow, take the underground to either Victoria or Charing Cross and change for a train to Canterbury. You can check in from 7am until 10pm on the day of arrival however keys cannot be collected before 2pm and please note there is nowhere to leave your luggage ifyou do check in before 2pm.

Computer / Internet access

Unfortunately there is no computer access on campus for conference participants, as a login and password are required everywhere on campus.

If urgently required, participants at the conference can access email, print and photocopy from the CentreLGS office in EliotCollege (see above).

On Friday 30 June there will be live jazz music and cocktails in the Gulbenkian from 9 -11 pm.

On Saturday 1 July, there is the Saturday Outing Summer Party an ‘LGBT friendly disco’ in the Horsebridge Arts and Community Centre in Whitstable: 11 Horsebridge Road. The disco is from 8- 11pm. Tickets cost £5/£3 concs. (Arrive early or reserve tickets as they do sell out!) Tel: 01227 281174
