Deputy Head Teacher

Line of responsibility: Directly responsible to the Head Teacher

Key Responsibilities:

Shared responsibility with the Head Teacher for the five key areas of leadership:

·  Strategic direction and development of the school

·  Teaching and Learning

·  Leading and Managing Staff

·  Efficient and effective deployment of staff and resources

·  Accountability

Strategic Purpose:

·  To assume the duties of the Head Teacher in her absence. To publicly support the work of the Head Teacher, the Governing Body and the school.

·  To share the vision of the school and contribute to its achievement.

·  To play a pivotal role in developing the school improvement plan through self review and monitoring its implementation through the Senior Management Team. To monitor the programme of whole school in-service training and its role in supporting the whole school development.

·  To work with the Head Teacher to strategically respond to government and local authority policy e.g. the new curriculum

·  Strategic development of a national curriculum subject.

·  To be proactive in developing the school’s capacity for integrated children’s services, working in collaboration with colleagues from neighbourhood teams, health and child development.

·  To support the Head Teacher and the Governors in budget setting and management.

·  To attend Governors meetings as required reporting on issues related to his / her areas of responsibility.

Teaching and Learning:

·  To offer outstanding professional model of classroom teaching, setting and maintaining high standards of work and behaviour in and out of the classroom as an example for others.

·  Direct responsibility for the strategic development of curriculum development, teacher and pupil performance.

·  Sharing responsibility for ensuring that all pupils within the school meet agreed targets. Working with the Head Teacher to monitor performance against targets across the school.

·  Sharing responsibility for ensuring that all teachers are performing as effectively and efficiently as possible and that the school systems support staff in the achievement of this.

·  To have key stage line management responsibility.

·  To work with groups of children across the school to accelerate progress.

Leadership / Operational role:

·  To assist the Head Teacher in assessing the priorities and needs of the school in making other important decisions concerning school policy, in consultation with staff and governors.

·  To develop and maintain good relations with teaching and non teaching staff, pupils, parents and other stakeholders in the school, and inform the Head Teacher of any problems they are experiencing and possible help which could be given.

·  To support the Head Teacher and the inclusion team in overseeing the pastoral care of pupils.

·  To line manage teaching assistants, welfare assistants and pastoral staff

·  To have responsibility for all extended provision across the school from Nursery to Y6.

·  To have responsibility for the safeguarding of staff and pupils and to support the Child Protection procedures within the school.

·  To work in partnership with the Head Teacher towards the standards outlined in the Head Teacher Standards 2015.

Leading and Managing Staff / Deployment of staff and resources:

·  Managing resources relating to all areas of responsibility.

·  Responsibility for leading, managing and developing all teaching and learning matters relating to national curriculum subject.

·  Working within the school’s professional development programme to ensure that s/he and all teachers keep their knowledge and expertise upto date.

·  Delivering staff meetings

Accountability:

·  To work with the Head Teacher to monitor the progress of staff and pupils

·  To take a lead in the target setting process across the school, to monitor performance and analyse results.

·  To support the Head Teacher in the self review process.

Conditions of employment:

The above responsibilities are subject to the general duties and responsibilities contained in the written statement of conditions of employment (the Contract of Employment).

The postholder is required to support and encourage the school’s ethos and its objectives, policies and procedures as agreed by the governing body.

S/he shall be subject to all relevant statutory requirements as detailed in the most recent School Teachers Pay and Conditions Document.

The postholder may be required to perform any other reasonable tasks as directed by the Head Teacher.
