Hello

Making up words to songscan be a wonderful way to interact with your children at home and to help with transitions, anxiety and tantrums. It doesn’t have to be complicated – “Zoom Zoom getting the car seat – buckle buckle buckle buckle (tune of Ridin in Car).Making up songs also engages children in musical thinking and compositional music making as they hear you make up songs or attempt to make them up themselves. You can let the children come up with suggestions about what to sing about or just pick up on what they are doing in the moment and join in with song! So today we’re going to make up some songs in class so just breath out and have fun cause there’s no WRONG way to do it. We find the fun in the doing! :)

Mary Wore a Red Dress – B below E

  • Let’s make up a song together
  • It is very profound moment for the kids when they see their parents take leadership of the class even if it is just for a brief moment. It shows them this is a safe place to stand out and share a bit of themselves as well as modeling leadership.
  • “SO! Mary wore a red dress…what is everyone else wearing today and what colour is it? Making contact with older kids – what do have on today? Tell mom. I’ll start us off and we’ll go around the circle one after the other. Now, you can’t sing it wrong this song. I LOVE it when people sing outta tune! ” If you have a non English speaker or someone struggling ask them to point to the item of clothing and have the group sing it. Get everyone clapping/snapping during this song so there is some rhythmic ground in the body as you go.
  • If you have a small group, you could add a la la la verse wherever you wanted to break it up. With a full group, I would just sing one verse per child.
  • (check in with the first person you plan to pass to to see if they are comfortable with going next).
  • Can do La La tune and a Mary wore a red dress to finish.

Riding in the Car - E

  • Get everyone in their cars as per previous weeks and open the floor to suggestions about what else we do in the car (sing, eat, laugh, sleep, turn, stop) or what other buttons are in the car (wipers, radio, lights)
  • Do 4 - 10 verses/suggestions/teacher ideas depending on # of suggestions. If LOTS of suggestions from group sing 1x. If 2-3 suggestions sing each verse 2x (ie previous weeks we did: macro 2x, micro 2x, turn 2x, stop 2x, singing 2x, and sleep)

Freezing (make up chant - feel)

  • Do Freezing 1x
  • How else do we feel sometimes? Who sometimes feels…(sad, happy, too hot etc). What sound goes with that feeling?
  • I’m_____(so sad) , I’m_____ (so sad)

I hope I don’t ______(start crying)

Sound suggestion (ahoo), (ahoo)

Basic sound – for wordy verse (wah wah)

(Ahoo) ) (Ahoo)

  • “Here’s one I made up at home…..” (Please make your own up if you’d like.)

IE:

I’m happy I’m happy

I hope I don’t start laughing

Ha Ha……Ha ha…..

Ha ha ha haha ha hah aha

Ha ha…….Ha ha…..

I’m boiling I’m boiling

I hope I don’t start burning

Ouch Ouch, Ouch Ouch

Hot sun, hot sun, sunscreen lotion

Can we please jump in the ocean

Ouch ouch, Ouch ouch

Tailor and the Mouse W/ Sheet – High C in F aeolian

  • Note: could use the same premise with scarves
  • Bring sheet out and spread it out so that everybody is seated around it. “Everybody you’re your needle…..Let’s all do some sewing!”
  • 1st verse straight while everyone holds a piece of the sheet to pretend to sew on – 1st half macro sewing, 2nd half micro sewing
  • “Let’s make some mice now” Repeat 1st verse or sing 2nd verse with hand making clear rhythmic actions under the sheet as it pretends to scurry around as the mouse
  • Tag last line of verse with “let’s get up to standing
  • “Let’s be the tailor!” Circle right holding onto sheet and walking like tailor on beat 1 - whole verse – staccato verse slightly up tempo
  • “Let’s all be the mouse” Digh Deedle verse sped up with quick pretend mouse scurry/run in a circle – finish this verse with a tagged last phrase and up and down billow of the sheet 2-3 times
  • Then billow sheet overhead and sit down on floor with everybody underneath in the ‘tailor and mouse’ house – big facials and storytelling – big ralintando with audiations on last phrase to finish – leave silence and then could squeek on resting tone.

Could do a dramatic ‘listen’ under the sheet and do TP’s from there

Oh When the Saints – E shakers

  • Oh when the saints – play with action/beat
  • Oh when the saints - play with action/beat
  • Oh when the sun - play with action/beat
  • Oh when the Band – play with action/beat
  • From this verse can set up group one on a drum ratta tat tat, group two on trumpet toot, group three on trombone and group four on cymbol crash sound – this group can make non-tonal crash sound every four beats….Are you ready?.... (all groups singing the tune of the song. Jam it out as long as it’s got good groove.
  • Or do a few more verses on vocables instead
  • Do 1 more 1st verse to finish

RP’s and 1-8

Stick Tune w/ teacher mix CD

  • Get everybody up and in a circle and suggest that “we’ll make up some movements to go with this song and we’ll just pass to the left around the circle. We can jump, skip, wiggle, move certain body parts like hips or toes or just go crazy during our turn. And we are happy to do an action again if someone stole yours! Whatever movement inspires you in the moment we will all do it with you. So for those of you who like to think ahead…now’s your chance to think of an action while I go over and get some music to groove to … (check in with the first person you plan to pass to to see if they are comfortable with going next).
  • 1st break – Hey Hey whatya say let’s all go like this today
  • All the other breaks – “ Hey Hey whatya say, pass it to the left today” or “Hey Hey whatya say what else shall we do today” (looking at next person in the circle) or some version thereof.
  • Keep singing the song a capella with a clap if you run out of CD music. There are 12 verses on the CD.
