Theodora, I have had the opportunity to help multiple UO student athletes on a term by term basis. Typically these are students that have charges that are not covered by their scholarship, and in some cases, students who have a partial scholarship.
In a particular case that I can recall, the student was on athletic scholarship, and is also a non-resident student. The student’s scholarship does not cover all the tuition and fees that are charged on his account. He typically has holds to register for courses each term, based on the amount left to pay out of pocket after his scholarship has been paid. Student’s cannot receive a scholarship for the next term unless they are registered for classes. I am able to help this student to set up payment plan during the term to allow registration for the next term.
Another situation occurred when a student was given a scholarship, however, this scholarship was not posted to the account, and a hold was placed. The student was very upset, and through working with athletics, and scholarship committee, I was able to allow registration for this student.
In many cases, student athletes are so busy with their outside schedule, that they are unaware that they have financial issues until it is too late and holds are placed on their accounts. Our office (4 classified staff) are able to help these students to get registered, and after graduation work out payment plans to allow students to fully pay off their accounts.
Without our help, students would not have the ability to register, thus, causing ineligibility for their sport, and continuation with their education.
I am hopeful that this will help, thank you for the opportunity to speak out for classified staff, and how much we are needed in helping student athletes, and all students.
Sincerely,
Stephanie J. Prentiss
