Pre-APArticle Assignment Rules

Step 1Choose a Science Article about the topic

You are going to be reading this article so make sure it is interesting to you and others. Choose an article that is no longer than 2 pages. Only Science Magazine articles will be accepted, NO WEBSITES, NO ENCYCLOPEDIAS. Go through EBSCO from the Media Center Web site.

The article should not be a “definition” article. It should be specific in that topic.

Step 2Read the Article and Take 10 Notes

  1. Write out 10 notes from the article
  2. Note #1 is the Citation, example below

Ornes, Stephen. "Kangaroos Have 'Green' Farts."Student Science2 Apr. 2014. (Underline magazine name if hand written)

  1. Notes are important ideas or phrases; avoid writing complete sentences when note-taking, 4-5 words.
  2. If typed, font must be Calibri or Ariel size 11-14

Step 3Article Summary 3 Paragraphs Long

  1. Paragraph 1 and 2– The first 2 to 3 sentences will be why did you choose this article (does it have a special meaning to you, is it something you liked, or did the title help you be interested)? What is it about?
  2. The rest of the first and the second paragraph will be the summary of the article. You should use the notes you took (in your own words) to create these two paragraphs
  3. Paragraph 3 –Did you like the article? Why or why not? Write about things the author did well / not so well. Is there anything you would have liked the author to add? Explain. This paragraph is about the article…not the topic.

This is the bare minimum required….you are welcome to do more

Re-read what you have written. Ask other people to read it; they will catch things that you miss.

Pay attention to presentation. It has your name on it. Your paper should look as though you are proud of it.

Step 4What do I turn in on Article Day??

  1. Your Article Summary (3 Paragraphs) – Name, Due Date, Hour on the front
  2. Your 10 notes (include Citation as #1) on the back
  3. Copy of your article (look for a “printer friendly” version or copy and paste the article to a Word document)
  4. Staple in this order and then share with your group
