Objective(s) / Students will be able to create scripts for an anti-bullying public service announcement.
Materials and Websites / Journals, Post-Its, Index Cards, SMART board, Projector, SMART board pens, Computer with internet.
Smart Start / Upon entering class the students will take sit in their groups, open their journals and watch an anti-bullying commercial featuring mixed martial arts champion and anti-bullying activist Bas Rutten from the Cartoon Network. The students will then respond to the following writing prompt;
In a well-detailed paragraph write a response to the situation depicted in the video.
Discuss the element of reality in the commercial. How do this situation, and the solution seem realistic? What could have been added or revised in order to make this situation relate more to the idea that your group came up with during yesterday’s class?
Mini-Lesson / The students will learn about script writing, including stage directions, setting, and the format of a script.
I will distribute copies of the play Novio Boy by Gary Soto to model the format and examples of stage directions and narration for the children. (We would have read this play already in a past unit or even a past school year. This play can be substituted with any play because it is only to demonstrate format, stage directions, and setting).
Show the children how to write out a script using the SMART board.
Application (Group Work) / The students will complete the Anti-Bullying Public Service Announcement script worksheet in their groups.
The students are to create a cast of characters including a bully, a victim, a mediator, and witnesses.
The scenario comes from the group’s situations discussed in the past class, and the extension exercise.
Each group member should be assigned the role of a character in the Public Service Announcement.
Conclusion / The groups will revise and edit their working scripts. Remind the students that their scripts should have a nonviolent solution with a positive outcome.
Extensions: / The groups are encouraged to go home and search anti-bullying public service announcements over the internet. They can use www.youtube.com, www.vimeo.com, or any other means of age appropriate video with parent’s permission.
The students are also encouraged to attempt to memorize their lines and be prepared to record their Public Service Announcement.
