Lemelson-MIT Program
/ Looking for a hands-on, project-based learning opportunity for your students? If so, the Lemelson-MIT Program wants YOU to apply for an InvenTeam grant. InvenTeamsTM are teams of high school students, educators, and mentors that receive grants of up to $10,000 each to invent a technological solution to a real world problem.
The InvenTeam initative is designed to excite high school students about invention, empower students through problem solving, and encourage an inventive culture in schools and communities. The deadline to submit an application for the 2011-2012 school year is April 22, 2011. For more information, visit the InvenTeams website.
NEED A LIFT?
Students from Washington unveil their agricultural lift at MIT.
As we've all heard, necessity is the mother of invention. The necessity in this case was for a fellow classmate to drive his family's combine. For most people who have grown up around agricultural equipment, scaling the narrow twelve foot ladder to reach the combine's cab is no problem. But for Sean, who is bound to a wheelchair, it used to be impossible.
Thanks to the Garfiled-Palouse High School InvenTeam, Sean can once again ascend to the cab of his family's combine to help with the harvest. See this team's story in their video on MIT's TechTV.
THE FUTURE OF HOME GARDENING
Nebraska students invent a self-sustaining, outdoor hydroponic gardening system.
Have you ever wished that you could grow your own herbs and tomatoes, but lacked the yard space to plant them or the time to tend the garden? If so, the Omaha Benson High School Magnet InvenTeam has invented the garden for you. This gardening system, dubbed "Eden 2.0," is the perfect size for apartment balconies and will automatically feed your plants. When its nutrient reservoirs run low, Eden 2.0 will send a text message to your wireless phone reminding you to refill them.
The InvenTeam presented Eden 2.0 at the Lemelson-MIT Program's annual EurekaFestTM last June. You can watch a video of their presentation on MIT's TechTV.
