STEM Development Grant – Alcoa

“In Georgia, STEM education is defined as an integrated curriculum (as opposed to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics taught in isolation) that is driven by problem solving, discovery, exploratory project/problem-based learning, and student-centered development of ideas and solutions. The saturation of technology in most fields means that all students – not just those who plan to pursue a STEM profession – will require a solid foundation in STEM to be productive members of the workforce.”

Dodge County Schools was the recipient of a STEM Development Grant in the amount of $15,000 from the ALCOA Foundation. The grant money will be distributed as follows:

Expected Results

By June 2014 and June 2015, students will demonstrate a 2-5% increase in the areas of science and math on CRCT and EOCT scores.

By June 2014 and 2015, 8th grade students will demonstrate a 5% increase in basic and proficient achievement on the 8th Grade Technology Assessment.

In 2013-14 and 2014-15, there will be a 5% increase in the numbers of students taking Advanced Placement courses in science and math. In addition, an increased percentage of students will achieve passing scores.

Accountability

All grant funds must be expended by June 30, 2015.

Resources and findings generated through educational research and development projects funded in part by the National Science Foundation can help inform states and school systems that are developing strategies for improving K-12 STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education.

Georgia STEM Day is a day for schools, students, teachers, and companies to raise awareness, celebrate and engage in activities involving science, technology, engineering and math!

The NASA Regional Educator Resource Center (RERC) is located in The Museum of Aviation’s Education Department and serves as a preview and distribution center for NASA produced educational materials which focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum. It offers K-12 and University educators teaching in Georgia easy access to STEM resources suitable for use in their classrooms.
