Steel Fire Rated Doors and Frames

GGI-PyroDoorsTM with Pyrobel Glazing

PART 1 - GENERAL

  1. DESCRIPTION
  2. Work included:
  3. Furnish all labor and materials to complete the fabrication of doors as shown on architect's drawings and as specified herein. All doors covered by this specification shall be fabricated by General Glass International (GGI), Secaucus, New Jersey, whose name and products are used to establish the standard of workmanship and quality construction required for this project. Other bidders must be approved by the architect at least ten days prior to the bid date, through submission of samples and evidence showing that the bidder has been fabricating door products of this type and quality for at least five years. All doors must be domestically manufactured in the U.S.A. All work shall include, but not be limited to, the following:
  4. PyroDoorsTM steel fully glazed fire rated temperature rise doors and frames with double integrated weatherstripped doors in single or double, swing-in or swing-out configurations.
  5. All door anchors, mullions, covers and trim.
  6. Factory applied finish.
  7. Related work specified elsewhere:
  8. Transoms, sidelites, and transparent wall system – see PyroFramesTM firerated wall system.
  9. Glass, glazing and glazing materials, Section 08810.
  10. Perimeter caulking, Section 07915.
  11. Miscellaneous structural items, Section 05100.

  13. QUALITY ASSURANCE
  14. Manufacturer shall have not less than 5 years experience in the fabrication of custom steel doors.
  15. Installation of doors shall be done by experienced door installers.
  16. Allowable tolerances: Size dimensions + 1/16 inch.
  17. Source quality control:
  18. Labeled fire rating
  19. Doors tested at positive pressure in accordance with NFPA 252, UBC Standard 7-2, CAN4 S104 and UL 10C for at least the required firerating with hose stream into a drywall sub assembly.
  20. Opening Size Limitations: Maximum area of 64 square feet, maximum height of 8 feet (96 inches) and maximum width of 8 feet (96 inches). This would include door, frame, sidelights, transoms and mullions as required.
  21. Door Size Capabilities:
  22. Single Door up to 44-7/8” x 94-3/32”
  23. Double Doorup to 47-1/16” x 94-3/32”
  24. Glass Size in Door: Maximum daylight area is 3,492 square inches, maximum height is 87-23/32 inches and maximum width is 39-13/16” inches. NOTE – These glass sizes are based on Pyrobel fire rated glazing maximum sizes as tested in combination with PyroDoorsTM. Each fire rated door and frame assembly shall be furnished with a Warnock Hersey® certification label, self adhesive Mylar. The label shall be located at hinge jamb of frame, visible when door is open.
  25. Quality of top coat combination shall meet or exceed the following ASTM designations: ASTM D714- Paint Blistering Test, ASTM D4585 – Humidity Test, ASTM B117 – Salt Spray (Fog) Test, ASTM D1654 – Painted Products in Corrosive Environments, ASTM G85 – Cyclic Fog/Dry Test (Prohesion), ASTM D5894 – Salt Fog/UV Painted Metal, ASTM D4541 – Pull Off Strength of Coating Test.
  26. SUBMITTALS
  27. Samples (as requested by architect):
  28. Typical door 6" long section with glazing beads.
  29. Color sample of finish.
  30. Hardware.
  31. Shop drawings and manufacturer's literature:
  32. Submit for approval shop drawings showing door and installation details, including anchorage, fastening and recommended sealing methods.
  33. Dimensioned elevations showing door opening and door sizes.
  34. The manufacturer shall not commence any work until shop drawings have been approved.
  35. Color charts for finishes.
  36. PRODUCT, STORAGE AND HANDLING
  37. The General Contractor shall be responsible for the protection and storage of the doors after delivery to the site.
  38. Store in designated areas in an upright position on wood slats or on a dry floor in a manner that will prevent damage. Ventilate canvas or plastic coverings to prevent humidity buildup.
  39. WARRANTY
  40. Provide GGI’s standard 5 year Limited Warranty.

PART 2 - PRODUCT AND FABRICATION

  1. MATERIALS
  2. Door and frames
  3. Shall be manufactured from 12 gauge cold rolled & electro resistance welded section produced from internally and externally Sendzimir galvanized steel strip.
  4. Profile sections to be fully enclosed, single element section, incorporating pre-punched thermal slots along the vertical length.
  5. Profile sections to be nominally 60mm deep by 50mm wide with 20mm glazing leg and or 22mm rebate legs to suit the application.
  6. Profile sections to be fully filled with solid insulating material prior to manufacture.
  7. Door profile sections to incorporate pre-formed weatherstrip rebate to provide a double weatherseal at leaf to frame interface using specialized fire rated extruded gaskets.
  8. Glazing beads
  9. Shall be cold rolled open section from a minimum of 16 gauge produced from internally and externally Sendzimir galvanized steel strip.
  10. Glazing beads shall be 20mm high by the width to suit the required glass.
  11. Beads to be retained at regular centers with hidden fixing snap over bead studs.
  12. Hardware reinforcements where applicable shall be 7, 10 or 12 gauge to suit specified hardware.
  13. Paint
  14. Pre-treatment
  15. Finish coat – Factory applied acrylic polyurethane
  16. FABRICATION
  17. Fabricate steel doors in accordance with approved shop drawings.
  18. Perimeter frame corners shall be coped and fully welded for maximum strength and weather tightness with face welds dressed smooth.
  19. Door leaves shall have top and bottom rails coped and fully welded to the jamb stiles with face welds dressed smooth.
  20. Doors and frames shall be mortised, reinforced, drilled and tapped to receive specified mortised hardware. Reinforce only for specified surface hardware for which drilling and tapping shall be done in the field.
  21. Anchoring of frame shall be per approved shop drawings.
  22. Glazing
  23. All doors shall be designed for inside or outside glazing where appropriate.
  24. Glazing beads shall be cut and shop fitted to each glass lite prior to shipment.
  25. Glazing beads are available to accommodate a variety of fire rated glazing materials to suit the specified fire rating.
  26. Glazing accessories to be per GGI’s tested glazing materials. Exterior applications should have cap bead of an approved silicone for weather resistance.
  27. Labeling
  28. Each fire rated door shall be furnished with a Warnock Hersey® certification label, self adhesive Mylar. The label shall be located at the inside sill of the door.
  29. OPERABLE HARDWARE
  30. Single swing doors (not fire exits) shall be provided with listed single point locks or latches with minimum of 3/4” throw.
  31. Single swing doors (fire exits) shall be provided with listed mortise or rim type fire exit hardware.
  32. Hinges – Standard surface applied or welded pivots per door testing.
  33. Closers – Surface applied or concealed closers shall be listed products.
  34. Other door hardware and accessories shall be listed products.
  35. Astragal – Pairs of doors shall have 1-1/2” x 12 gauge astragal, unless pair has fire rated mullion.
  36. Thresholds - Threshold shall be as shown on approved shop drawings.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

  1. INSPECTION
  2. Door openings shall conform to details, dimensions and tolerances shown on the door manufacturer's approved shop drawings.
  3. Conditions which may adversely affect the door installation must be corrected before installation commences.
  4. The wash down of the adjacent masonry must be completed before erection commences to prevent damage to the finish by the cleaning materials.
  5. INSTALLATION
  6. Doors specified under this section shall be installed by experienced personnel.
  7. Install doors in openings in strict accordance with approved shop drawings.
  8. Set units plumb, level and true to line, without warp or rack of frames.
  9. Anchor units securely to surrounding construction with approved fasteners.
  10. The exterior joints between the doors, trim and mullions shall be properly sealed water-tight with an approved sealant and neatly pointed.
  11. Attach door hardware, as required, and adjust doors to operate smoothly free from twist and to be weather-tightwhen closed.
  12. Repair any abraded areas of the factory finish.
  13. CLEANING
  14. Door installer shall leave door surfaces clean after installation and ready to receive glass and glazing. The door installer will not be responsible for final cleaning.
