Got Guts?

Mammalian Body Systems Multi-Station Lab – Please glue this into your notebook – 30 points

Station A – Circulatory System (Heart)

1- Feel your pulse by placing two fingers at pulse points on your neck or wrists. The pulse you feel is blood stopping and starting as it moves through your arteries. Take your pulse by counting the number of beats in 10 seconds ______then multiply by 6. Write the number of beats per minute here: ______

Factoid:Give the tennis ball a good, hard squeeze. You're using about the same amount of force your heart uses to pump blood out to the body. Even at rest, the muscles of the heart work hard—twice as hard as the leg muscles of a person sprinting.

2-3 Look at the sheep heart. The blood comes in to the top chamber and exits through the bottom chamber. Which chamber has larger muscles? ______Why? ______

4-Hold out your hand and make a fist. If you're a kid, your heart is about the same size as your fist. Infer: did this heart belong to an animal larger or smaller than you? ______

5- Identify the heart structure at pin #5 ______(hint- use the diagram)

6- What is the major function of the circulatory system? ______

Station B – Muscular System - Microscopes

7- Look at the cardiac muscle slide. Draw what you see here:

8- Look at the smooth muscle slide. Draw what you see here:

9- What is the biggest difference between cardiac muscle and smooth muscle?

10- Look at the muscle-tendon junction and draw what you see here:

11- Based on what you see, infer which is “tougher”, muscle or tendon. Support your reasoning with an observation.

Station C – Urinary System – (Kidney & Microscope of nephron tissue)

12- Identify the structure at pin #10 ______(on the kidney)

13- Identify the structure at pin # 11 ______(on the kidney)

14- What is the major function of the urinary system? ______

15- Look in the microscope, draw what you see here

16- Infer: Why were “Kidney Beans” so named?

Station D – Nervous System – (Brain, Eye and microscope of cerebellum)

17- Identify the structure at pin #17 ______(on the brain)

18- Identify the structure at pin #18 ______(on the brain)

19- The brain is an organ because it has several tissue types working together. Name (or describe) two of these types of tissue.

20- How do the brain and eye work together ? What is it called when two organs work together? ______

21- Identify the structure at pin #21 ______(on the eyeball)

Station E –Skeletal System – Microscope Slides

22- Look at the Compact Bone. Draw what you see here

23- Look at the Spongy Bone. Draw what you see here

24- How do the muscular system and the skeletal system work together to make a mammal move?

25- Try This: Stand with you back touching the wall. Try to bend over and pick up a tissue placed directly in front of your toes. (The tissue must be on the floor and touching your toes.) Can you do it?

Station F – Respiratory System

26-30 Measure your own lung volume by blowing into the spirometer bag. (Clean the mouthpiece off with an alcohol wipe first.)

My lung volume is ______liters and ______milliliters Next, gather data from at least 3 other students and create a bar graph.
