Course Description: This 3-day course will provide an overview of basic statistics with applications relevant to water quality data analysis. Topics covered will include descriptive statistics, basics of statistical intervals and hypothesis tests for common situations, and how to handle censored data sets (data with some or all values reported as below the detection / reporting limit). Please see class agenda (below) for a more detailed description of course content. Students will also learn how to use “R” and “R Commander”, free statistical software packages, for data analysis.
Instructor: Stacey Hancock is a Lecturer in the Department of Statistics at the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Irvine. Dr.Hancock's research is primarily in statistics education, with other research interests including time series and environmental statistics. Dr. Hancock earned a Ph.D. in Statistics from Colorado State University. For further information, Dr. Hancock’s CV is posted:

Waterboard Travel Restriction: Travel for this class is restricted. This means that, in order for you to be reimbursed for travel costs related to this class, your supervisor must determine that you need the class for your current job and must approve your attendance.

Academy Cancellation Policy: Registration for an Academy event is a commitment to attend. If for any reason you cannot attend, you must cancel your registration as soon as possible, and at least five days prior to the class. Staff who do not show up when registered for a class and/or who repeatedly cancel their registration less than five days from the date of the class may be barred from registering for future classes, and will be subject to “bumping” from classes depending on demand.
