Architects Design
People live in homes. They shop in malls. They work in offices. Who designs these places? Architects do!
Architects come up with ideas to build things. They talk to the person who hires them. They find out what needs to be built.
Architects think of a good design. They make sure the building is safe. They want it to look nice too.
Architects draw sketches. They also build models. That helps architects share their ideas. Now other people can see what the building will look like. / 9

Getting Water from a Well
Long ago, people got water from a well. They made a hole in the ground. They would dig until they found water.
A place where they found water was called a well. People lined the inside of the well with stones. They tied a long rope to a pail. A pail is a type of bucket. They dropped the pail down into the well. The pail filled with water.
People pulled the pail of water up from the well. They carried water into their homes. They used the water for cooking and cleaning. / 10

Getting Around Alaska
Alaska is very cold during winter. Snow and ice cover the ground. Not all roads get plowed. How do people get around?
They can use skis. Skis help people glide over snow. They can use snowshoes. Snowshoes help people walk on top of snow. They can use dogsleds. A team of strong dogs pulls the sled.
One of the fastest ways to travel is by snowmobile. A snowmobile has a motor. A snowmobile has skis on the front. It helps people in snowy places get around quickly. There are many ways to get around, even in deep snow! / 9

Birthday Blues
Lee thought about her birthday as she walked to school.
“This is my very own birthday,” she said. “And no one seems to care. Today does not seem special to me. No one has said a word about my birthday. No one has made a birthday wish for me. Not even Mom or Dad. How could they forget?”
Lee was afraid she might cry. But she didn’t.
Lee tried to do her schoolwork. But all she could think about was her birthday. / 9

A Wish from the Fish
One morning the fisherman’s wife said, “This house is really too small. I think the fish could give us a larger house. I would like to live in a castle. Go to your fish and ask him for a castle.”
“Oh, my dear wife!” said the husband. “This house is big enough. Why would we want to live in a castle?”
“Go along,” said the wife. “The fish might just as well give it to us. Do as I say!”
The man did not want to go, and he said to himself, “It’s not the right thing to do.” But he went anyway. / 7

The Race
Before Jan could say another word, several things happened. The horn sounded, calling the racers together. Mr. Cook, from the bank, said over the loudspeaker, “All scooters at the starting line.” And Mrs. Hall and Maria’s mother and dad were standing nearby.
Both girls bent down to retie their shoes. Then Jan’s mother noticed that Jan was wearing her own low shoes.
“Remember,” she said quietly. “You make your own luck.”
Jan didn’t dare look at her mother. She had to win the race. She just had to! But how could she expect to win without the lucky sneakers? She wished she could just slip away and go home. / 8

A Pet in a Bowl
One day Jim had been watching the pets on the balconies. He said to his mother, “I would like to have a pet.”
Jim’s mother was cooking dinner. She didn’t even look at him.
He said it three times before his mother answered him.
“Our family is big and our apartment is small,” she said. “There is not much room, but you may have a small pet. It must be little enough to fit in a bowl.”
Jim watched his mother. She just went on with her cooking. / 10

The New Puppy
The puppy was the color of gold. It was warm, it was just right to fit in the bowl.
Jim was so happy he could not speak. He tried to thank the shopkeeper and his wife, but no words came.
The woman smiled. “Do not speak,” she said. “We see your thanks in your face.”
Jim walked down the street, carefully carrying the puppy in his bowl. He did not stop to speak to anyone. He walked down the hill and into his apartment.
“LOOK,” he cried. “It fits in my bowl!”
His brothers laughed, and after a while, his mother laughed too.
Jim laughed the longest of all. / 11

The Turnip
There once lived an old man and an old woman.
They had a little white house with tall trees all around it.
At one side of the little white house there was a garden.
Soon the days were not too cold. The old man and the old woman went out to their garden.
They thought they would plant a turnip in it.
They wanted the turnip to get big and tall.
So every day they wished for rain.
But the rain did not come. / 10

The Talking Crow
At one time there was a talking crow.
His name was Sim-sal-a-dim.
Day in and day out he sat in a big green tree.
Day in and day out he called from the tree,
“Sim-sal-a-dim. Sim-sal-a-dim.”
One day the farmer looked up in the tree.
“That crow talks all day long,” he said. “And all he can say is his name. He just calls, ‘Sim-sal-a-dim. Sim-sal-a-dim.’”
The farmer’s wife looked out the door.
“I will tell Sim-Sal-a-Dim what to say,” she said. “He can do some work for me. He can shoo the hens away from my door.” / 8
