STATE OF LOUISIANA MASTER NATURAL GAS FITTER

  • What is a Master Natural Gas Fitter License?

A Master Natural Gas Fitter is a person who possesses the necessary qualifications and knowledge to plan and lay out natural gas systems, supervises gas fitters in the installation, alteration, and/or repair of natural gas systems and is licensed as such by the State Plumbing Board of Louisiana.

  • What do you need to qualify for the Master Natural Gas Fitter Exam?

To qualify for examination, you must hold a current Natural Gas Fitter License (journeyman) and submit an application OR hold a current Licensing Board for Contractors Mechanical Work (statewide) license OR hold a current license issued by the Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board certifying or registering he/she as a professional engineer. Both Mechanical Work and Engineer license holders must produce a copy of a current license when applying.

  • The Master Natural Gas Fitter Exam includes a two (2) part written exam.

Part 1 Written Examination Description: Open Book Examination, consisting of eighty (80) multiple-choice questions.

Passing Grade: Seventy Percent (70%) Fifty-Six (56) questions answered correctly.

Allotted Time for Part 1 Written Exam: Three (3) Hours

Part 2 Written Examination Description: Open Book Examination, consisting of forty (40) multiple-choice questions.

Passing Grade: Seventy Percent (70%) Twenty-Eight (28) questions answered correctly.

Allotted Time for Part 2 Written Exam: One (1) Hour

Referenced Materials and Supplies Allowed During Testing: Bound (Referenced) Code Books, Calculators, and Pencils (No Loose Pages, Note Pads, Sticky Notes, Cellphones or Recording Capable Devices)

Total Combined Time for Examination: Four (4) Hours

  • When are the Master Natural Gas Fitter exams administered?

All examinations will be held in February, May, August and November of every year at the State Plumbing Board of Louisiana’s Administrative office, 11304 Cloverland Avenue, Baton Rouge, LA 70809.

*Examination dates are subject to change due to conditions beyond the control of the Board.

  • What happens after the State Plumbing Board receives my application?

First time and returning applicants must submit applications no less than thirty (30) days prior to any scheduled examination. Applicants are scheduled in the order in which they are APPROVED.

This application must be legibly completed in its entirety by the applicant, properly signed and dated, include a 2 x 2 photo attached and witnessed before a Notary Public with a check or money order in the amount of $110 ($100.00 Exam Fee + $10.00 Processing Charge)

* Any application that does not meet these requirements will result in a delay in processing the application for the next available exam.

The State Plumbing Board will mail out test letters to everyone scheduled for each exam thirty (30) days before exams.

  • Need to Know:

If the applicant has an address change between the time he/she sent in their application and the time they could be scheduled, it is the applicants’ responsibility to notify the State Plumbing Board of Louisiana.

NO Applicant should appear for the examination unless he/she has received a notice from the Board.

The Notice must be presented at the time of examination. Applicants will also be required to show photo identification before being allowed to take the examination.

If an applicant does not appear for the scheduled examination or cancels less than thirty (30) days prior, the exam fee will be forfeited.

If an applicant withdraws an application thirty (30) days prior to the examination, fifty percent (50%) of the examination fee will be retained for administrative cost.

  • What happens if I pass/fail my exam?

If you pass:

Each applicant will be notified of their passing scores through the mail. It can take up to two (2) weeks to receive your scores in the mail. No test scores will be given over the phone.

Upon passing the examination, an applicant will be notified to complete the appropriate Initial License form and return it with a $190.00 fee for his/her license.

Passing scores are only valid for ninety (90) days. If an applicant fails to send in the appropriate form and payment within the ninety (90) days, the applicant will forfeit their scores and will have to retake the entire examination.

*Each license holder will be responsible for taking continuing education each year through an (approved program) and renewing their license before December 31 of each year.

If you fail:

Each applicant will be notified of their failing scores through the mail. It can take up to two (2) weeks to receive your scores in the mail. No test scores will be given over the phone.

Upon failing the examination, an applicant will be notified to complete a retake form in order to be scheduled for examination.

If an applicant passes one part but not the other, the passing score will be good for one (1) year. The applicant must take the exam again within that year in order to keep the passing score.
