Job Description

Position Title:Development and Communications Officer

Core Area:Mission Support

Department:Communications and Fundraising

Reports to:Director, Mission Support

Time Classification:Full Time

Position Summary: The Development and Communications Officer will focus on developing sustainable support for SNAP, as well as effectively communicating its messaging to key stakeholders. This position will provide leadership and supervision for the Communications and Fundraising Team (CFT), drive fundraising efforts, foster a culture of philanthropy, and effectively relay the brand messaging of the organization. The Development and Communications Officer will plan, coordinate and assure implementation of strategies to develop donors and contributions to support the organization. This is a challenging, yet rewarding position that helps set the direction and ensures the financial health of the organization. The individual is expected to be a competent fundraising technician, an eloquent spokesperson, and an excellent team and administrative leader.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Leadership and Supervision:

  1. With input from the team and agency leaders, develop a comprehensive communications and fundraising strategy aimed at creating awareness and securing resources in support of the fulfillment of SNAP’s mission. Work with the CFT, other SNAP staff members and volunteers to achieve the goals identified in the comprehensive communications and fundraising strategy.
  1. In conjunction with the Director of Mission Support, create a comprehensive development and communications budget.
  1. In conjunction with the Director of Mission Support, provide leadership & support in developing and implementing strategies & programs of the SNAP Board Communications and Development Committee.
  1. In conjunction with the Director of Mission Support, assist the CFT in creating annual goals, setting benchmarks and ensuring timely and accurate reporting of outputs and outcomes.
  1. Select, train, support, supervise, and evaluate assigned staff. Ensure team members receive job-related orientation and training. Establish clear expectations for performance, support employee development, and hold employees accountable for their work performance, processes and results.
  1. Foster a positive and productive working environment characterized by open communication, expectations of excellence, and adaptability to change.
  1. Ensures that CFT administrative items like timesheets, purchase orders, monthly CFT dashboard and overall CFT administrative support systems like but not limited to Results Plus, CFT work order system, website and volunteer management system are completed timely and running smoothly.

Development:

  1. Cultivate and solicit major gifts prospects and donors. Implement and coordinate solicitation strategies with the CFT, agency leadership and volunteers.
  1. Develop and implement a planned giving program. Work with board and agency leaders to target, cultivate, educate, and solicit potential donors. Assist in the evaluation and acceptance of all planned gifts.
  1. In collaboration with agency program leaders assess priority needs to be funded with private support and develop strategies including identifying and cultivating new sources of funding including private, public and corporate/foundation sources to meet said needs.
  1. Ensure the implementation and continued development of SNAP’s stewardship and cultivation plan for donors and partners.
  1. Oversee efforts for annual giving, special events, management of the donor database, grants management and volunteer coordination.

Communications:

  1. Ensure that best practices are in place for the creation of relevant and innovative agency messages (print, web, social media, talking points) which are consistent with the SNAP Mission, Vision, Values and brand.
  1. Oversee a marketing/public relations strategy that will allow the agency to cultivate and enhance relationships with key audiences, including media and key influencers.
  1. Lead the effort in developing an annual media and communications plan that broadens awareness of SNAP’s efforts in the community.
  1. Oversee efforts in partnership development and stewardship.

Other:

  1. Work with coworkers and volunteers to promote a positive, respectful and productive working environment, while protecting client confidentiality and dignity.
  1. Within the context of the stated principal job duties, serve as ambassador and positive representative of SNAP’s mission and values.
  1. Complete assigned projects and perform related duties as needed or situation dictates.
  1. Provide excellent customer service at all times as well as help to grow the customer service

culture within the agency.

Requirements:

Education and Experience

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Marketing, English, Communications or related field with minimum of four years of progressively responsible relevant experience which includes: a minimum of three years of development experience AND two years of supervisory experience, OR a minimum of eight years total development experience with two years supervisory experience.
  • Preferred: Bachelor’s degree with eight years development experience and five years supervisory experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of or capacity to learn charitable giving and related laws and regulations.
  • Ability to establish strong working relationships with donors, colleagues, Board members, SNAP leadership, government officials, volunteers, and community contacts.
  • Proficient in computer operations, including word processing, spreadsheet, wordpress and database applications.
  • Knowledge of donor software system(s)
  • Ability to empathize with and advocate for low-income and vulnerable people, and to maintain confidentiality with personal information.
  • Demonstrated success in personally cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding gifts of $5K+ from individuals, companies and institutions.
  • Significant experience conducting face-to-face donor meetings and solicitations.
  • Experience in successfully planning and executing fundraising campaigns.
  • Experience successfully handling administrative team systems.

Training and Certifications

  • Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, insurance, and personal vehicle for Agency business (mileage reimbursed)

Work Environment/Physical Activities:

Work is generally performed in an office setting, though will require local travel. Scheduling flexibility is required to accommodate evening, weekend, and unanticipated public relations needs. High degree of activity (e.g., errands, set-up, etc.) required around events.
