3.1 Career Center Update – Michelle Richards (handout)Job Hub flyer.pptx
DISCUSSION / We are starting a brand new Career and Job Center at COD. We hope to have a small scale version by the end of this semester, and a full center in 2 years.
We currently have an on line job hub where students can look for jobs and employers can post job and internships. At the on line job hub students can go to mock interviews and watch videos about the job search process. We are hiring a full time career counselor as well. High school students can go onto the job hub, however the resume template is restricted to COD students.
Students can go on line and access an “interest profile” using the job hub. (This part is not restricted.) If you have Ideas for the new Career Center or there is anything in particular you would like to see included, please email Michelle at:
3.2 Math Field Day Announcement – Karen Tabor (handout)Math Field Day.pdf
DISCUSSION / Every year we have math field day with several high schools. Please join us on April 15th. There are prizes for the students, deck of cards, t-shirts, and lunch.
3.3 Concurrent Enrollment Update/Fall Concurrent Enrollment Status –
Zerryl Becker/Christyann Anderson
DISCUSSION / Dr. Kinnamon announced we now have a single point of contact for concurrent enrollment. Christyann Anderson will be the conduit and a team will work behind her internally to address requests. Please provide Christyann with what you would like to see and she will provide Dr. Kinnamon a copy of all requests. Christyann and the team will work with Dr. Kinnamon and he hopes this will help to streamline the process.
Dean Becker has pulled together a work group behind this task force. The deans, counselors, faculty, will all work behind the scenes. Funnel everything through one person so we can collect the requests and we will send them to the appropriate contacts. We will have a counselor that will come to each of your schools in April and May with Christyann and work on getting the application completed for any student that you think is interested in taking a concurrent enrollment class next fall. If we can get that going early in the spring we will be better prepared. We will schedule appointments with each of you. Our fall schedule will be available in April. This is a high priority. Your high school and programs are what makes this college a college. Dr. Kinnamon is very supportive of this effort. We have a good task force with lots of commitment.
Someone asked if there is a list of which dual enrollment programs have been approved. Because each department does their own schedule, and the fall schedule is not out yet, we only have the CTE schedule. A good start is to email Christyann the classes you would like to see offered and any other information.
On line classes are a good option and you do not require minimum enrollments for the class to run. You can provide a few students from each high school.
We are articulating some classes; the content of the class matches ours; the rigor probably matches; but one piece is missing – growing up:
  • Start with a one unit on line class 4 – 6 weeks, and get an A
  • We have classes that can help with that
  • 180 students are taking 735 credits for Spring in concurrent enrollment
a. Christyann will bring task force out to high schools.
b. Each school should give her a date of when they would like her to come out
c. Task force will put together a list of items that the students will need (info for parents as well)
d. Block out 4 hour time frame
e. Take students through registration process from beginning to end
Prior to each semester they will already be enrolled and have their COD ID, have authorization form from their parents, understandhow to navigate the web site, and by the time they start their concurrent enrollment class they will have less anxiety about how to navigate the college and the classes.

5. Discussion Topics
5.1 An honest discussion about concurrent enrollment and pathways
DISCUSSION / How can we improve and what are the barriers, i.e. scheduling, summer school, timelines-Some barriers can be broken, some are more difficult. What wouldyou like us to do?
  • PSHS - pathway to an AA through concurrent enrollment process (night classes, on-line classes, etc.) a map for students should be an option
Get a good start, get on the right pathway.
Dual enrollment starts in 9th grade; concurrent enrollment must be 11 and 12 grade this would need to start sooner.
COD: 11th and 12th grade is not a Title 5 issue it is a best practice issue. 9th and 10thgrade concurrent and dual enrollment is a local issue (must demonstrate ability to counselors). Starting in 9th grade 5 classes a year is doable. There is creativity with new legislation. Title 5 is supporting these relationships along with career pathways.
  • PSUSD - Equitable distribution of classes; regular outreach counselor that goes to sites and kids know when they will be there; work on testing out of articulated courses; good data system/CATEMA; multiple measures-align the system to what the state is asking for
COD: Our capture rate is only 28%, one of the lowest in state. One goal at COD is to bring more HS students into college. Dual enrollment is aimed at students already planning to go to college. How do we capture more students? Data from State tells us Skills Builder classes, certificates, and AA degrees pay a lot more than jobs they get coming from high school. Including non-credit courses where completing a short term program can greatly increase job ability.
  • PSUSD – On the right track. In the past COD was not interested in coming out and meeting with kids. COD is making much more of an effort to meet with our kids. In development of dual and concurrent enrollment we are doing small groups and carefully placing to keep the trust of COD. We will add more variety of kids as we go forward. We are still afraid classes will get pulled.
COD: Another opportunity is to identify what your capstone classes are, what industry certification your students are receiving, and what is appropriate next step. Non-credit is an opportunity to offer HS students stackable opportunities work in the field while in college. Gives us another layer of things to look at.
-CTE has flexibility with articulated credit, and credit by exam
-We are hiring 7 new counselors at COD and starting faculty advising program.
-We have resources to bus students as part of equity plan. If you commit a group of students, we can provide resources. Bring your students to one of our campuses. Review logistics and commitment of students.
-Come up with menu of services we can provide. Get right people in the room at each site. Resources at Mecca Thermal are now available. They are staffed.
  • Create menu of services (general ideas) possibly bring to Counselor Conference in April – capture ideas
  • Start with one site. A pilot site.
  • Counselor Conference give content that is more than superficial. Articulate what we are doing at Ed Consortium. A forum opportunity for counselors to voice their ideas, an actual interaction
