STARS FINISH SEASON WITH MANY IMPROVEMENTS!!

The State Qualifying Meet held at Iowa Western Community College’s Campus began swiftly at 4pm with the Varsity Girls Race. The Girls race included not only MRAC members CBAL, CBTJ, East and West, but also Lewis Central and ranked teams that included #4 Waukee, #9 Johnston and #10 Des Moines Roosevelt. The Stars were led by close finishes from Freshman Lillyana Yebra (39th, 17:48) and Senior Captain Paige Noble (40th, 17:49). Noble was only ten places from receiving the very tough and prestigious honor of Academic All-State, which the Stars haven’t received since Creighton’s Daniel Poston took the honor in 2011. Freshman Mercy Oyadare again proved she’s a force to be reckoned with, knocking off another sub-18 minute performance, running 17:58 for 44th place. Junior Jasmin Ruelas, one of the most consistent runners of the season, took 52nd place in 18:49. Sophomore Danyalle Twohig took the final scoring spot for the Stars, taking 53rd in 19:12. Shauna Folchert, who admittedly had better days, battled through immense abdominal pains to gut out a 56th place 19:32. Nicole Prescott rounded out the race for the Stars with her 61st place 20:26. The Stars took 9th place with 228 points.

The Stars look to make an enormous impact next season as they return 6 of 7 Varsity runners. “To get over the Mountain, you first have to get to the Mountain.” – Anonymous.

The Boys raced promptly at 4:30pm. They had a look in their eyes, an intense look of determination as they looked to pull an upset on a fellow MRAC Team. The boys had been getting run over by the Top 4 runners from East as well as another two tough West runners in recent races. That would not happen this day. They Boys were led by Junior Team Captain Connor Coyle, who ran a monster PB time of 17:27, not only finishing 25th, but also ahead of East’s #2 runner for the first time this season!! Coyle knocked 22 seconds off his previous best time! Sophomore Sensation’s lead singer Kaleb Maynard followed Captain Coyle through the line taking 34th in a PB of his own, running 18:00, within 4 seconds of East’s #3 and #4 runners, and ahead of West’s Sheehan Levine, their #2. Freshman Gavin Bush was in a dogfight of his own as he closed in on his teammate, taking 38th place in 18:03, only 1 second behind Levine and 3 seconds from Maynard! Fellow Sophomore Sensations guitarist Daniel Folchert has completely broken out of his shell this season. Folchert has shown that not only can he be a tremendous runner, but he is someone that other teams need to watch for over the next two seasons! Folchert’s 18:24 was good for 40th place. Freshman Camden Beller found himself scoring again for the Stars. Beller has only competed in three Varsity competitions (Crofton, MRAC and State Qualifying) and has scored for the Stars each time!! Beller finished the season with another massive PB, running 5k in 18:43, over a minute faster than his last JV race as a STAR!! Sophomore Sensations Drummer Jacobus Noble, better known as Ko, and sometimes even KO, took 46th place for the Stars, narrowly missing out on his own PB time, running 18:48. Andrew Lindquist rounded out the day for the Stars, ensuring all runners were under the 19-minute mark, a feat the Stars haven’t accomplished since Holstein. Lindquist covered the 5000 meter course in 18:52, good for 49th place.

The Stars have begun talks of goal setting for both the summer and upcoming season, as all 7 Varsity Runners look to return. In fact, not only are the top 7 runners returning, but the Stars return the top 16 runners, and look to add a ton of talent into next year’s Freshman class! The future looks great for the Stars!! “You don’t have to be GREAT to START, but you have to START in order to be GREAT!” – Anonymous.
