Diabetic Lunch Meeting
Art Therapy
Health Trainer /
  • Diabetic Lunch meeting has been arranged for Friday 19th May at 12:30 here at the surgery. Our Diabetic nurses will be on hand to answer any questions. We also have a diabetic dietician coming in.
I have been in touch with the Alcohol team, Heath trainers and Health champions who are also happy to attend the meeting to offer help and advice to patients.
I am going to advertise the event as more of a self care/advise/awareness event. I will keep you informed of the teams that will be attending so you can let your friends/family know.
  • Art Therapy class is going really well. We are thinking of rebranding it to creative corner/group so that we do not discourage the non-arty people from attending. It may be that you are not very good at drawing but are good at knitting. We could have a knit and natter group running at the same time. Maybe create some teddies to give to the hospitals or to sell on a charity stall?
  • Creative Writing. This is another group we could have running on a Monday in creative corner. Nicky is a published writer and Andy knows somebody who does creative writing
  • The walking group that meets on a Monday outside the surgery at 11am are going to come in next week, have a cuppa and a chat and maybe stay for the group.

6.30pm Patient Access Plan / Justine updated the group on the access plan which includes having health trainers, physio’s, pharmacists, nurse practitioners on site. This allows the patient access alternative clinicians rather than the GP.
Jennie Jones our Health Care Assistant is now a qualified Nurse. The practice has mentored her for the last 4 years and Jennie is now working for us as a Nurse 3 days per week.
Sheridan Bond our phlebotomist is training to become a health care assistant. She is at college 1 day per week. She is now able to do wound checks and dressing changes. When qualified she will be able to a wider range of care to patients including flu jabs, health checks etc. This will then free up the Practice Nurses to deal with the more complex needs of the patients.
Action Plan 2017 / We need ideas on how to improve patient experience at the practice. How do we let our patients know of the groups and services we provide? Leaflets and posters are in the waiting room but patients don’t read them. They come in and sit down and look at the screen waiting for their name to be called.
Do we buy another screen just to advertise our groups on? That way all the information is in one place and the patients do not have to look over someones shoulders to read the notice boards.
All agreed this was a good idea. The practice will look into the costings of this and report back.
AOB / Communication. How do we communicate to our patient to let them know of all the groups the practice offers?
The website is kept up to date for all the patients who have access to the internet. How to we spread the word to our patients who do not have a computer or smartphone?
  • We could send a text message out with a link to our website or newsletter with all the upto date info on.
  • Staple a copy of the newsletter to prescriptions.
  • Nicky suggested we put a copy of the newsletter on the backs of each chair in the waiting room for patients to read while they are waiting. If they do not have time make spare copies of the newsletter accessible for patients to take a copy and read at home.
Are there any more groups that patients think would be good?
Gardening Group? – If any patients have an interest in gardening they could run a group to help tidy the practice grounds. We could ask for flower or bulb donations from patients to keep the costs down. I am sure we all have spare tools we could give to the group.
Knit and Natter group.
I will do a poster and maybe send a text to see what interest we get back.
We also discussed the fact that people often resent the Receptionists asking for information. The ONLY reason the reception staff ask patients what the problem is, is so they can make them an appointment with the appropriate clinician ie Doctor, Nurse Practitioner, Practice Nurse. We need to educate patients to the alternatives to a GP.
As well as suggesting the text messaging to alert people to what's on, Leanda suggested that we consider putting a message on the answer machine to explain to people why they may be asked to give details of their condition to the Receptionist. I will do a new message for the telephone to include this.
Creative Corner – To produce a page for May’s newsletter advertising the group.

In Attendance: Julie, Justine, Leanda, Dorothy, Nicky, Andy, Arthur, Hazel, David
