#4311 – Emergency Medical Service Guidelines

Purpose:

To define the duties and responsibilities for the members of the Hughestown Hose Company while operating on the ambulance crew on EMS Incidents in Hughestown Borough and surrounding communities.

1Policy:

1.1All members are to respond to the station until the ambulance has gone enroute to the scene.

1.2The crew (EMT & EVO) who initially arrives on the ambulance should proceed directly into the scene to begin patient care. All other personnel with the exception of the Line Officers, must stage at the ambulance and wait for orders.

1.3Any types of open toed shoes are not permitted to be worn on EMS calls. This is strictly a safety issue due to the danger of personal injury and transmittable diseases. If a crewmember is responding to an incident wearing open toed shoes, that member must put on their bunker pants and boots or a suitable substitution.

1.3.1Any member on the scene of an EMS call not meeting the above criteria may be released from the incident and/or face disciplinary action.

2.1For all other EMS Polices, please refer to the EMS Policy Binder that is located in the Dispatch Room at the station. The State Department of Health and the Hughestown Hose Company are both responsible to govern these Policies. Any member that does not follow these policies shall be subject to disciplinary action, which may result in immediate suspension or termination.

3EMT Duties:

3.1Is responsible to provide any and all treatment given to the patient(s) during the incident in accordance with state and local regulations.

3.2If no Line Officers are present on an EMS incident, the EMT on the call will act as the Crew Chief and must monitor and instruct the other crewmembers during the incident.

3.3Shall follow all of the guidelines set forth in this manual when responding to other types of incidents.

3.4Shall make sure that the ambulance is cleaned and restocked after each call.

3.5Shall retrieve the patient’s information sheet from the registration office at the hospital after each call.

3.6Must complete the trip sheet within twenty-four (24) hours after the completion of each call.

3.6.1If the trip sheet is not completed within the twenty-four (24) hour time period, disciplinary action will be taken, which may result in immediate suspension or termination.

4EVO Duties:

4.1Is responsible for driving the ambulance in a safe manor under the provisions explained in the Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Code both to and from the scene.

4.2Shall follow all of the guidelines set forth in this manual when responding to other types of incidents.

4.3Retrieve any equipment that is requested by the EMT while on the scene of an incident.

4.4Assist the EMT with obtaining the patient information while on scene of an incident.

4.5Shall make sure that the ambulance is cleaned and restocked after each call.

4.6Shall notify a Chief Officer or a Line Officer of any problems or potential problems with the ambulance or any equipment.
