Midland is a compact urban community located on the shores of beautiful Georgian Bay with a population of approximately 18,000. The Town of Midland is a lower tier municipality within the County of Simcoe. As such, it delivers planning, water, wastewater, roads, parks, libraries and other ancillary services.

The Town of Midland is currently seeking a Transit Operator for a casual on call role. This position, reporting to the Manager, Maintenance Operations, will be responsible for the safe operation of the Town’s Transit vehicle while providing customer service in a courteous and professional manner at all times.

Midland Transit schedule is six (6) days a week (Monday to Saturday) from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm.

As our ideal candidate, you will possess a valid class “BZ” or “CZ”driver’s license with a clean abstract with 1-3 years experience operating a transit bus. You will have excellent customer service skills and an ability to exercise critical thinking and judgment in stressful situations.

Transit Operator

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operate transit vehicles including large and small buses
  • Provide a high standard of customer service to patrons in a safe, courteous and professional manner at all times
  • Conduct pre and post trip vehicle inspections, safe and defensive driving in accordance with the Highway Traffic Act in heavy traffic and inclement weather conditions
  • Collection of fares using fare box and communicate route information to customers
  • Enforce policies and guidelines, adhere to published schedules and communicate with dispatch via 2-way radio
  • Operate a wheelchair lift and secure passengers’ wheelchairs to restraining devices for stabilization during trips as required
  • Adherence to all Health and Safety Rules and Regulations (W.H.M.I.S., Occupational Health and Safety)
  • Wear personal protective equipment as required.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum secondary school education or equivalent training and experience
  • Must possess a valid Ontario class BZ or CZ drivers license with a clean drivers abstract
  • One (1) to three (3) years experienceoperating a transit bus
  • Experience driving in inclement weather conditions
  • Ability to react and deal with emergency situations and exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to multi-task and work effectively in stressful situations
  • Knowledge of road/vehicle safety precautions, Town streets, bus routes and route timing with the ability to call out stops as per the AODA.
  • Excellent communication and demonstrated customer service skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team as well as independently
  • Certification in First Aid/CPR & WHMIS is an asset

Working Conditions

  • Physical demands require sitting for prolonged periods of time, reaching, grasping, pushing/pulling of steering wheel, twisted and turning of neck, sensory/perceptual demands, along with good concentration
  • Regularly exposed to fumes, odours, and moderate noise
  • Available to work a variety of shifts including days, afternoons, weekends and sometimes on short notice.
