Finding Your Flow: Stand Up Paddleboard Yoga

Instructor: Julie Carmalt, PhD, Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT 200), ACE Paddleboard Yoga Instructor, ACA Level 2 SUP Instructor

Class description: Yoga balancing on a paddleboard? Yes! Come learn to float and flow in this all-levels stand up paddleboard (SUP) yoga class! Each class session will include a complete Vinyasa (flow) yoga class “on board” followed by a pose-of-the-day sequence breakdown and ending with a floating meditation – aaahhh. Expect to be challenged, supported, and encouraged – practicing yoga on an unstable surface requires small and large muscle activation, mental focus, courage, and playfulness. Classes will be themed to support mindfulness, stress reduction, self-awareness, and fun! No experience necessary.

Prerequisites: Students must be comfortable recreational swimmers in order to take this class.

Attendance/Timeliness Policy: Students are expected to be on time and ready to participate at the start of class.

COE requires that students attend the first class meeting because of the critical logistics, policy, liability, and safety information that will be covered. If you do not show up for the first class you lose your right to retain your spot on the roster, and we may enroll another student in your place. In this event you will still be held responsible for full tuition fees, and may receive unsatisfactory grading. If you are on the waiting list, you will only have a chance of being added to the class if you show up to the first class meeting and a student on the roster is not present.

Cell Phone use is not permitted during class.

Please take time to review additional Cornell Outdoor Education Course Policies.

Things to Bring to the First Class:

·  Appropriate SUP Yoga attire which includes a non-cotton underlayer (swim suit; trunks and tank top; yoga capris and sports bra, etc.) and a non-cotton long-sleeve top to add and remove as body temperature changes. Additional layers may include a winter beanie and fleece socks.

·  Be prepared to get wet (yes, SUP yogis fall in sometimes!) and to layer up to maintain body heat during class (it’s particularly easy to get chilled during our closing meditation).

·  Towel and change of clothes for after class.

·  Non-glass water bottle.

·  An adventurous spirit!

·  Completed Participant Medical Form

SUP Yoga Curriculum - Goals:

3.  Students will know how to modify skills and techniques for their body type and skill level.

4.  Students will know how to set up and usethe equipment and facilities safely.

5.  Students will appreciate how application of yoga practice and principles to other areas of daily life improves overall wellbeing.
