Shift / Work Schedule: 7:00 am to 3:30 pm, Monday – Friday

RESPONSIBILITIES:

/ Refrigeration Mechanics share responsibility for the typical duties that include but are not limited to:
  • Responsible for journeyman level work in the operation, maintenance and repair of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
  • Operate and maintain campus utility systems including chillers, HVAC equipment, building management systems, ice rink and Zamboni machinery.
  • Must be able to work from ladders, scaffolding and high lift equipment, including bucket trucks and scissor lifts. Work may also involve confined spaces and trench excavations as needed.
  • Perform water treatment chemistry for glycol, chill water and condenser water systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair pumps, fans and pneumatic/ddc control systems.
  • Apply parts, operator and repair manuals, and recommend possible repair solutions. Document and report repair and maintenance needs including detailed part orders, and oversee repairs to completion.
  • Installs new equipment both as replacement units and new installations.
  • Lays out reference points for the installation of components using structural measuring tools including minor sheet metal installations.
  • Rewires electrical systems of components as necessary.
  • Locates and seals leaks in both gas and brine units, removes air from lines and replaces with proper refrigerant. Includes brazing, soldering or other typical methods.
  • Performs seasonal start-up and shutdown operation on air-conditioning units and systems to insure efficient operation and to prevent freeze-ups.

QUALIFICATIONS:
NOTE: NY State Preferred list candidates, if applicable, have preference.

(ability to perform all responsibilities above and):
Successful completion of a NYS two-year Refrigeration Mechanic Traineeship or NYS two-year refrigeration repair and maintenance training program; OR successful completion of any equivalent refrigeration two-year training or apprenticeship program;* OR four (4) years of full-time experience in the mechanical or electrical trades under a skilled journey-level mechanic or electrician which would provide training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program, one (1) year of which must include both training and work in the operation and maintenance of commercial type refrigeration or air-conditioning equipment..Apprenticeship training in the mechanical or electrical trades or training gained by completion of technical courses in the mechanical or electrical trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
* Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific class room instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of C or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.

OPERATING NEEDS:
  • Perform repair and maintenance activities with considerable independence and initiative.
  • Ability to provide and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Applicant must be willing to obtain the knowledge to operate and maintain all equipment related to this position.
  • Applicant must be willing to work scheduled and unscheduled overtime as needed.
  • Candidate must possess a valid New York State Driver License, Class D or above (other than a motorcycle license), that will be verified through the NY State Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Ability to operate a variety of hand & power tools and diagnostic equipment for electrical, mechanical and refrigerant containing equipment.
  • Ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labor.
  • Universal certification in refrigerant handling per EPA Clean Air Act, 42 U.S. Code Section 7414(a) which includes all campus equipment classifications (recordkeeping, inspections, monitoring, and entry).
  • Ability to work in a diverse and team oriented environment.
  • Good interpersonal skills, ability to work with others/team - customer service attitude.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Possession of a High School Diploma or GED.
  • CDL driver’s license. Forklift operator training.
  • Minimum of 4-year experience in the preventative maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment.
  • Demonstrated computer experience preferably with building management systems and Maximo maintenance management software.
  • Previous experience in an HVAC repair environment.
Two References Required: Applicant must provide two references, one of which is a current supervisor, who can substantiate his/her qualifications and performance, including time and attendance, reliability, interpersonal skills and ability to work independently.
