The European United Left/Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL) Group

in the European Parliament

Post: Assistant - Greek language - Grade Ast 3 - Temporary agent, indefinite contract

Based in: Brussels, but will be expected to travel to the other places of work and to other Member States for short missions.

The GUE/NGL Group in the European Parliament brings together MEPs from a range of European left and progressive parties - ecological, socialist, communist, and independent. In virtually all policy areas, it argues against the mainstream neoliberal prescriptions for the EU and is focussed on presenting progressive policy alternatives. Staff should be comfortable in this environment and both capable of, and fully at ease with, supporting our MEPs in their policy objectives.

Candidate profile

The Group is seeking to recruit a Press Assistant who will work in a team responsible for the internal and external communications activities of the group, including; relations with the press, press releases, press conferences, media events, website, social media, audiovisual output and communications with NGOs, political parties etc.

Although part of the Group's central communications unit, s/he will have specific responsibility for communications on behalf of the Group's Greek delegation of MEPs.

Her/his duties shall include:

·  preparing, producing and distributing communications output, across all media, for the Group as a whole and for the Greek delegation;

·  liaising with the Greek press and news media and with Brussels based European media organisations;

·  supporting organisation of Group events and publicity work;

·  promoting MEP's activities in Committees and delegations;

·  managing pre-session information work, including briefing material; and

·  communicating with GUE stakeholders.

The appointee will be a good team worker, readily able to give and take help, support and advice from staff colleagues as well as able to establish good collaborative relationships with colleagues in the wider GUE/NGL, other political groups, and the EP Administration.

S/He will be adaptable and able to accommodate the varying needs of a political group in terms of: the changing volume and intensity of the workload; the type of contribution required ranging from high-level advice to basic administrative support; and, a work schedule determined by the parliamentary and political calendar.

S/He will be committed to advancing the Group's policy programme and political objectives, ready to propose options and strategies with those in mind while always recognising that ultimate decisions in these areas are the responsibility of the group's political leadership.

General conditions for admission

The selection procedure is open to any candidate provided that s/he:

- is a national of one of the Member States of the Communities, unless an exception is authorized by the authority referred to in the first paragraph of Article 6, of the Conditions of employment of other servants of the European Communities (CEOS) and enjoys her/his full rights as a citizen;

- has fulfilled any obligations imposed on her/him by the laws concerning military service;

- has (i) a level of post-secondary education attested by a diploma, or (ii) a level of secondary education attested by a diploma giving access to post-secondary education, and appropriate professional experience of at least three years, or (iii) where justified in the interests of the service, professional training or professional experience of an equivalent level;

- has a minimum of 3 years full-time professional experience after acquisition of the qualifications specified above; more extensive relevant experience would be very desirable;

- has mother-tongue Greek and a satisfactory knowledge of another EU language; for operational reasons, good English is necessary, and French and/or Spanish would be advantageous; other EU languages will be taken into account;

- has a good knowledge of the institutional structure of the EU and of its activities; familiarity with the operation of political groups would be an advantage;

- is IT literate (familiarity with MS Office, MS Outlook, web browsers etc.); and

- ideally, has education/training and/or professional experience across various aspects of modern communications.

The successful candidate will be recruited as temporary agent in the AST 3 grade.

Selection procedure

The selection procedure shall be on the basis of qualifications and oral and written tests.

The selection board will draw up the list of candidates who meet the specified conditions.

It will then establish a list - normally between 3 and 5 - of those candidates whose qualifications and experience best match the duties to be carried out and who will be called for tests.

Interviews with the selection board will be in English and Greek; the maximum time allowed will be 60 minutes; 75% of the marks will be available for this test which will also take account of the information in the applicant's application file.

Written tests will be in English and Greek; the maximum time allowed will be 60 minutes and 25 % of the marks will be available.

Following these tests, the selection board will establish a list of suitable candidates.

The Bureau of the Group will select the candidate to be appointed from this list; the remaining candidates may be placed on a shortlist from which future appointments will be made.
