8. Summary of Accountabilities: The Penn Transplant Institute is a dynamic environment where clinicians, researchers and administrators collaborate to improve the care and experience of transplant patients. The Institute seeks a vibrant individual to focus on three main responsibilities: 1) performing statistical analyses of existing data to support quality/regulatory, operational and clinical data needs related to the transplant enterprise; 2) acting as a liaison between the Transplant Institute and Penn Medicine Information Systems Team in the development of a Transplant Data Mart; and 3) providing limited and specific statistical advice to clinician investigators undertaking research projects. The successful candidate will work with administrators, investigators, database managers, research coordinators and clinicians to complete this work. The candidate will have skills and experience in performing independent statistical analysis, some experience with automated data extraction from clinical databases, and leadership potential.
The statistical analytical work will include the customization of datasets, merging data from Penn Medicine and external databases, production of tables and reports, univariate and multivariable analyses including survival analysis. The candidate will work with Institute leadership to implement existing software that determines whether center outcomes, after risk adjustment, are similar to expected outcomes. The successful candidate would ideally have familiarity with Stata software as well as other software packages.
The Transplant Statistician will also collaborate with Penn Medicine Information Systems and Penn Transplant Institute in the development of a Transplant Data Mart. This position requires collaboration with key clinical and administrative stakeholders from the Transplant Institute, PennQART and Penn Medicine Information Systems. Advanced problem-solving, analytic skills and significant individual judgment are essential.
The Transplant Statistician will also meet with clinical investigators and provide expert input related to the use of appropriate statistical tests, power calculations and feasibility.
Key areas of responsibility include:
- Produce meaningful data and statistical analyses aligned with data needs for transplant quality/regulatory, operations and transplant outcomes research;
- Collaborate with Penn Medicine IS and Penn Transplant Institute in development of a Transplant Data Mart;
- Monitor data integrity and system level trends within the Transplant Institute and Transplant Data Mart;
- Partner with individuals from the Transplant Institute, cross functional UPHS clinical and application teams and external organizations and agencies.
Minimum Certifications, Registry and/or Licenses Required:
- None
- Master’s (required) or PhD (preferred) in Statistics, Public Health, Mathematics, Computer or Systems Engineering or related field.
- Direct work experience with large set data analysis in complex clinical setting and a general understanding and knowledge of clinical operations.
- 3+years experience in clinical data management, clinical disease registries, population health or in the medical best practices, managing, cleaning and integrating large, complex databases (specifically SQL databases: SQL queries and SAS.
- Excellent written and communication skills
- Strong technical knowledge / skills involving application of data management tools
- Leadership, strategic planning and project execution skills with proven ability to successfully manage up, down and across the organization.
- Knowledge of healthcare operations and data structures and the use of information system applications in the practicing healthcare and/or research environment required.
- Ability to analyze large data sets to provide meaningful results, including but not limited to survival and longitudinal analysis
- Ability to present complex information in a visual format
- Must be able to present information verbally to groups of varying size and audience, including clinicians
- Must be able to manage complex projects through project life cycle assuring on time and on budget completion
- Must be able to function as part of a team providing a high level of quality service to customers.

12. Minimum Computer Skills:- Must be able to work within Stata, SAS or equivalent statistical software;
- Experience with SQL, business objects, vendor databases such as Epic is a plus.
- Excellent PC skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access and ability to use hospital clinical databases
- Experience with report development using SAS, SQL and/or ad-hoc reporting tools.
- Experience with Data Warehousing concepts strongly preferred
- Experience with Data Integration tools is a plus but not required
