MAPS, Providing Health and Human Services to the Portuguese-Speaking Community since 1970, is seeking to fill the following position to serve the GreaterBoston, and North Shore areasas members of our MAPS Health Services Team:

Community Health Worker position

Part-Time

Minimum 20 hours per week

Coordinate health education activities for Portuguese-speaking and Latino men, living in theBoston, Metro west, North Shoreand South Shore areas. The primary responsibilitiesof thispart-time (20 hours minimum) Community Health Worker is to:

  1. Identify and reach target population, geographic areas, venues/settings and peak times in the targeted areas that are at high risk for transmission of HIV, STIs and viral hepatitis.
  2. Maintain a flexible weekly schedule to include days, nights, and weekends as necessary to deliver services to target population at most risk.
  3. Work as part of a team with health educators and community volunteers to develop strategies for providing prevention and education to identified populations.
  4. Recruit and establish relationships with volunteers
  5. Work in teams with designated program staff to provide mobile CTR and STI activities such as community level interventions and large events.
  6. Conduct brief and comprehensive HIV/STI/VHP risk assessments. Develop an individualized risk reduction plan.
  7. Screen for HIV/STI/VHP via collection processing, packaging and submission of blood and urine specimens to State Laboratory.
  8. Distribute educational and harm reduction materials including condoms, lube, and printed material.
  9. Assess and prioritize need for supported referrals that are culturally and linguistically appropriate.
  10. Identify, foster and network with community-based organizations, community leaders/stakeholders, businesses, churches, coalitions, task forces, public events,etc. in order to identify and plan new recruitment and outreach/mobile clinic initiatives.
  11. Produce weekly progress/program reports in English and fulfill required data collection and funder reporting requirements.
  12. Perform duties consistent with agency/program policies and procedures.
  13. Responsible for performing other duties as required by supervisor, directors or designee.

QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, candidates must have outstanding knowledge of target populations, organizational skills and have a solid understanding of HIV/AIDS.

  • Have a general understanding of HIV, STI and harm reduction services.
  • Staff will be trained and certified as Health Educators/ Community Health Workers on HIV, STIs and viral hepatitis.
  • Knowledge of area resources.
  • Experience in working with vulnerable populations.
  • Sensitivity to IDUs, homeless, those with MH/SA issues.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of experience in health and human service field preferred.
  • HIV rapid and STI testing technology certification and/or phlebotomy preferred.
  • Good organizational, communication (oral and written) and time management skills required.
  • Computer proficient in Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint.
  • Required Bilingual/Bicultural Portuguese, Cape Verdean Creole and/or Spanish.
  • Must possessvalid Massachusetts driver’s license, access to a vehicle and extensive travel.

Part-time position (minimum 20 hours per week): Flexible days/hours, and expectation to work nights and weekends. Starting hourly range commensurable with experience and education: $20.00- 22.00
