Staff Development Day - 21st April, 2008

While Holy Familians were relaxing on the Monday following the busy weekend of project presentations, the staff spent a day being informed on how they can assist students in their self-directed learning through Independent Enquiry Study (IES). But that was not all – teachers spent the last hour and a half of the day getting an insight into the type of diet that was suitable for them to combat stress.

The Staff Development Day started with a sharing from Mr. Tai Wai-sum, Vice-Principal of Shatin Methodist College, on the various strategies that could be employed by teachers with regard to IES. Some of these included the use of graphic organizers, checklists for peer-evaluation, grouping, assistance from senior form students, setting up a resource bank of previous IES projects, and features of good IES theme topics – FNWM, namely Focus, New, Workable and Meaningful. During the break, potential teachers of Liberal Studies in the New Senior Secondary Curriculum seized the precious opportunity to talk to Mr. Tai who generously shared his experience in the manpower planning for IES.

Following the talk on IES, teachers got into groups and discussed the best choice for lesson time allocation in the New Curriculum. After the lunch break, the teachers were fed with more information on how they could stay healthy. The talk, which was presented by a registered dietician from the World Cancer Research Fund, got many teachers reflecting on their food intake and changes they ought to make to their lifestyles.

Dear Mrs. Yip,

I have written two articles for the homepage - one on the Project Presentation Day and another on the Staff Development Day. They have been proofread by Mrs. Lau. I would appreciate it if you comment on them. Thank you.
