TEACHER HANDOUT

By participating in this program your students will be enrolled (as a group) in 4-H. You will receive the 4-H newsletter and information about other 4-H opportunities that you may share with your students. If you do not want to receive this information please let me know.

We will return on at to listen to the student’s speeches and to give them feedback. At that time each student will receive a 4-H participation ribbon. We ask that you fill out and return the attached evaluation form.

Follow up activities:

  • Identify the main points in the example speech

–Food – should eat dog food

–Shelter – in the house or have their own doghouse

–Exercise – go on walks or play lots of outdoor games

–Preventing disease – give heart worm prevention pills and see the vet regularly

  • Make bullets or cards that could be used to give the example speech
  • Use the steps in Express Yourself! (Figure 1 gives a great overview) to help students write their speech
  • Practice speeches in front of small groups and give each other feedback

Albemarle/Charlottesville 4-H Speech & Presentation Contest:

All of your students are invited to participate in this 4-H contest. It will be held March 28 beginning at 6:00 pm. We will bring registration forms with more information when we come to listen to the speeches in your class.

Judges:

One 4-H volunteer will be in each classroom to judge the student speeches. We request that each teacher also provide a judge so that there are two adults giving feedback to each class. The judges will take turns listening to speeches and writing comments so that we can take less class time. I will arrive at your school 30 minutes early in order to train the judges that you select. I encourage you to ask principals, custodians, secretaries, or other adults who know the students in your classroom to help judge.

Our Second Visit:

Before we arrive each student should have the top of their speech evaluation sheet filled out and ready to turn in for judging. Please determine the order of speeches before we arrive in order to minimize “down time”. Parents are invited to come and listen to their child’s speech. We also encourage the students to give written feedback to their peers.

TO:4-H Embryology School Enrichment Program School Contacts

FROM:Staci England

Extension Agent, 4-H Youth Development

DATE:October 22, 2003

I hope that you had a successful embryology project this year and that your students learned a great deal. I have heard some great classroom success stories, and even some excellent learning opportunities in rooms where the hatch percentage wasn’t as high as hoped for.

All of the 4-H School Enrichment Programs are well researched and I believe that they are effective. But it is very important for me to know if the programs are meeting your needs. With that in mind, I have enclosed an evaluation sheet and I ask that you and the other teachers at your school involved with the embryology program take the time to thoughtfully fill it out. Feel free to add any additional comments on the back of the form.

To return the completed evaluation, AlbemarleCountySchool teachers may drop it in the pony addressed to Virginia Cooperative Extension (4-H). Teachers in the City of Charlottesville should use the stamped envelope that is enclosed.

I understand that some of you may not be the contact person for your school next year. If that is true for you please send me the name of the new contact person so that your school will get the 4-H Embryology Program information next year.

Thank you for your continued participation with 4-H. I look forward to reading your feedback and working with you in the future.
