EVENTS PACKAGE

(6 Events + Bonus)

Stable as a Sequoia - Knots and Teamwork

Objective: The Den, joined together, is to travel over a course as quickly as possible.

Equipment:1) A piece of rope 4 ½ feet long for each boy in the Den.

2) A ring of rope 2” in diameter

3) Stop watch

Procedure: Each boy in the Den of 4 to 8 boys takes a rope and ties a Bowline around his waist making sure the rope is snug around his middle. Next each boy ties the other end of his rope to the 2” ring of rope using a Taut-Line Hitch. He then adjusts the taut-line hitch until there is only 1 foot of rope between his waist and the center ring. (See drawing). The den then walks from point A to point B as quickly as possible.

Rules: 1) Work as a team

2) Care must be given to proceed safely.

3) No one may be dragged by the group.

Scoring: Timed event, plus points for each correct knot in addition to the spirit

points. Maximum time is 15 minutes.

Forging the Big Bend - Creative Thinking and Teamwork

Objective: The Den works together to build a pipeline from point A to point B in order to transport a small ball across the Big Bend River.

Equipment:1) 8 sections of PVC pipe at various angles

2) 1 small ball

3) 1 pail

4) A stopwatch

Procedure: Each boy picks us asection of pipe and lines up in a straight line all facing the same direction. At the signal from the judge, the first boy drops the ball into his pipe, being careful that it does not roll out the other end. The second boy aligns his pipe with the end of the first boy’s pipe and they move the ball into the second pipe. The first boy then moves to the end of the line. The second boy moves the ball to the third boy and so on, until the ball is dropped into the pail at point B, which is 50 feet away.

Rules: 1) Feet cannot move while the ball is being transferred from one pipe to

the next.

2) The boys cannot change position in line once the event has started. You

can only move from front of the line to the end of the line after you

have transferred the ball to the next member.

3) If the ball falls out of a pipe before being deposited in the pail, the Den

must start over at point A. The boy who was doing the passing is now

the head of the line.

4) You cannot block the end of the pipes at any time. Hands can only hold

the pipe and move them around as needed to transfer. You cannot

hold the two pipe ends together with any part of your body.

Scoring: Timed event with a maximum time of 15 minutes in addition to the spirit points.

Escape the Bad Lands - First Aid and Team work

Objective: Den will demonstrate the skills required for transporting peoplein various ways during an emergency situation.

Equipment:1) 2 poles

2) 3 items of clothing or 1 blanket

3) Stop watch

4) Cones and rope to mark a zig-zag trail.

Procedure: Den members must pair up. Line the pairs along the back of the event area. The members of eachpair will be transporting one another from point A to point B using first aidtransport (carry) techniques. There are 4 parts to this event:

Part 1) Single-Rescuer Assist using the Walking assist method (use 2 boys)

Part 2) Multiple-Rescuer Assist using the Four-handed seat (use 3 boys)

Part 3) Multiple-Rescuer Assist using the Hammock carry (use 4 to 6 boys)

Part 4) Multiple-Rescuer Assist using a Stretcher (use 4 to 6 boys)

Rules: 1)All boys must participate in one or more of the techniques.

2) Carry out the event in the order listed above.

3) Execute each part from point A to point B going through a zig-zag path.

Return all members back to the start and then move on to the next technique.

4) You must rotate the boy"injured"in each technique.

5) Care must be given to proceed safely.

Scoring: Timed event with a maximum time of 15 minutes in addition to the spirit points.

Camp at the Golden Crown Mine- Camp Setup

Objective: The Den will work together to set-up a sample Boy Scout camp site.

Materials:1) An assortment of camping equipment will be furnished

2) 6 cones

3) Rope or caution tape

4) An American Flag & base

5) A Pack Flag & base

6) Stop watch

Procedure: All members of the Den will help set-up a samplecamp site using the BoyScout method. It will include 1 youth tent, 1 adult tent, cooking area,campfire area, meal prep and dish washing area, flag placement, eating area and open activity area. Will include, food storage, fire safety and trashhandling. Below is information on a camp set-up. It contains some itemsthat will not fit into this event.

Camp layout:

Perimeter Rope with main entrance (may have a back door with rope closer)

Colored streamers every 12’ feet on rope

American Flag on the left side and Pack flag on the right side of the entrance (as you stand outside looking in)

Pack name at the front entrance

Camp contains twoclearly identified sleeping areas

  • Area for Adult's tent
  • Area for Scout’s tent
  • Tents: Organized.
  • Sleeping bags need to be flat and placed on each side with center clear.
  • Scout bag placed on foot of bag. Pillow placed at top of bag.
  • No clothes, shoes, books etc, showing. (hide under the bag)
  • Screen door closed but outer door open.

Camp at the Golden Crown Mine- Camp Setup cont.

  • Tarps are to be folded under the tent and not seen.
  • Tents are to be staked down

First Aid

  • 1 first aid kit
  • Permission slips

Cooking area

  • Cooking equipment containers needs to organized
  • ALL food must be place in plastic boxes with lids and stored in the SHADE
  • All food boxes needs to be animal proof.
  • A 3 tub dish washing station is required.
  • Clean dishes can be left in a dish pan drying on the table next to the chuck box (That is the only thing that is to be left out)
  • Grease can is set under the chuck box
  • Water pail or large bottle is set under the chuck box.
  • Menus are in plastic and displayed. (can use clip board)
  • Duty roster (Cook, Clean-up and Fire) in plastic and displayed
  • All gas tanks stored under table in SHADE

Eating area

  • Table in a neat row
  • Table clean and empty
  • ALL trash picked up and placed in the correct trash bag.

Open area

  • Boy’s chairs arranged neatly
  • Equipment boxes arranged neatly
  • All trash picked up
  • CLEAN, Clean, Clean

Scoring: Timed event with a maximum time of 15 minutes in addition to the spirit points.

Lugging the Liquid- Teamwork

Objective: Your den is out at a dry camp for the weekend! The only water source is miles away from the campsite. Your den must work together to transport water from point A to point B.

Materials:1) 1 Bucket full of water

2) 1, 1ft x 1ft wooden board with 8 6-foot ropes attached evenly 3) 1 cup

4) Stopwatch

Procedure: Den members will space themselves around the board and hold onto one of the fixed ropes. The cup will be placed on the board by the Lead Judge. Dens must walk 50 feet from point A to point B without spilling the contents of the cup. If there is a spill, den must have their cup refilled and start over from point A.

Rules:1) Dens of 5-8 members may only hold one rope each.

2) Dens of 4 members may hold two ropes each.

3) No den member may directly touch the cup or the board.

4) The board must be carried no lower than the knee height of the smallest member.

5) Dens will be given up to 3 minutes to discuss strategy prior to the start of the event.

Scoring: Timed event with a maximum time of 15 minutes in addition to the spirit points.

Yogi's Picnic Basket- Team work

Objective: Yogi Bear is out looking for a pic-a-nic basket. He sees your den making lunch and is waiting for the right moment when you're not looking to swoop in and snatch it. Den will work together to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, blindfolded.

Materials:1) 1 Blindfold

2) Bread

3) Peanut butter and Jelly

4) Plastic knife

5) Various obstacles

6) Small tables

7) Stopwatch

Procedure: Each den will choose one member to blindfold. In the event area there will supplies to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich (peanut butter, jelly, bread, knife).* Each den member will select a component of the sandwich to be responsible for. Each den member must help guide the blindfolded scout, around various obstacles, to each of the supply items in order to make a complete sandwich. Blindfolded scout must assemble a complete sandwich and feed each person one bite.

*PEANUT ALLERGY - PLEASE notify the Lead Judge if anyone in your den is allergic to peanuts prior to starting the event. All ingredients will be substituted with a jelly only version.

Rules:1) Den members may not touch any of the supplies or the blindfolded scout.

2) Scouts may only use verbal commands to guide the blindfolded scout.

Scoring: Timed event with a maximum time of 15 minutes in addition to the spirit points.

BONUS - Mystery Event (optional)

Each den may participate in the bonus event. This event will take place during the same time slot as the Golden Spoon Competition. This is a great opportunity to include boys in an activity who do not wish to cook in the Golden Spoon or who do not wish to make Troop visits .

If you would like to participate, each den must bring the following materials with them to Webelosree in a large food storage bag, labeled with the unit and den number:

1 Ruler

1 Pair of scissors

1 Paper towel roll

1 Roll of masking tape

1 Roll of duct tape

Your materials will need to be checked in when your den flag is submitted for judging on Friday night. Challenge instructions and additional supplies will be added to your materials and will be returned at the beginning of the Mystery Event on Saturday.

Your den will have two hours to complete the challenge. Dens are encouraged to make their Troop visits prior to beginning the challenge.

Spirit points will be awarded for participating.
