Church in Central and Eastern Europe

Next week’s special envelope collection supports the Church in Central and Eastern Europe. While the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union endured decades of communist oppression, the church suffered grave wounds to its spiritual life and its ability to serve the people. Through this collection, Catholics can now build bridges to these countries, spread God’s Word over vast areas with modern communications media, train Church leaders of tomorrow, help needy families materially and spiritually, rebuild churches that have fallen, and support the sisters and brothers who have suffered for the faith. For more information, please visit

Dear friends—

It is just about impossible these days not to hear someone complain about the dismal weather. It has not been much of a summer thus far. Its been tough to plan any outdoor activities and you feel sorry for people who saved all year to rent a cottage at the beach and then have to watch it rain day after day from inside.

As much as we might talk about the weather and complain about it, one thing is certain—you cannot change it. The weather will do whatever it wants to do. I guess one good thing about talking about the weather is that it takes up some of the time that we might spend talking about others.

As I think about this weather pattern, I am reminded that in addition to the weather there are many things in life that we cannot change. We can’t prevent every illness; sometimes we cannot change the poor behavior of people—even people in our own families; we can’t always undo the harm we might have caused another by our actions or our poor choice of words; we can’t always prevent others from making poor choices or engaging in harmful behavior; we can’t prevent death from taking from us the people we love.

As much as many of us like to “be in control”, life is filled with all sorts of things that we will never control. No matter how much money or technology we apply to many issues or problems, there are some things that are beyond our capacity to change.

If we are not careful, this inability to control things can often lead to bitterness, disappointment and frustration. Sometimes it can lead to anger with God, because when things do not work out as we would like—there can be the tendency to look for someone to blame.

I cannot imagine how people can live without faith. Faith is not an “insurance policy” that guarantees that whatever we pray for will be given to us on our terms. Faith reminds us that we are to walk with God throughout the course of our lives—to walk with God in moments of joy as well as moments of need. Faith reminds us that God will give us those things that we truly need, but that sometimes God asks us to be patient and to have the wisdom to ask for those things that are truly important. Above all, faith reminds us that this life is not all there is. We are made to know, love, and serve God during our lives here on earth, so that one day we can be with the Lord forever in Heaven.

Indeed, it can be hard for many of us to give up control, but if we place our lives in God’s hands, we will never be truly disappointed.
