National Eating Disorders Awareness Week,
Feb. 22-28, 2009
Ten Things Parents Can Do to Prevent Eating Disorders
by Michael Levine, Ph.D., and Linda Smolak, Ph.D.
Consider your thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors toward your own body. Educate your children about the genetic basis for the natural diversity of body shapes and sizes, and the nature and ugliness of prejudice. Make an effort to maintain positive, healthy attitudes & behaviors. Children learn from the things you say and do!
Examine your dreams and goals for your children and other loved ones. Avoid conveying an attitude which says in effect, “I will like you more if you lose weight.” Decide what you can do and what you can stop doing to reduce the teasing, criticism, blaming, staring, etc. that reinforce the idea that larger or fatter is “bad” and smaller or thinner is “good.”
Learn about and discuss with your children (a) the dangers of trying to alter one’s body shape through dieting, (b) the value of moderate exercise for health, and (c) the importance of eating a variety of foods in well-balanced meals consumed at least three times a day. Be a good role model.
Make a commitment not to avoid activities because they call attention to your weight and shape.
Make a commitment to exercise for the joy of feeling your body move and grow stronger, not to purge fat from your body or to compensate for calories eaten.
Practice taking people seriously for what they say, feel, and do, not for how they look.
Help children appreciate and resist the ways in which the media distort the true diversity of human body types and imply that a slender body means power, excitement and popularity.
Educate children about various forms of prejudice, including weightism, and help them understand their responsibilities for preventing them.
Encourage your children to be active and to enjoy what their bodies can do and feel like. Do not limit their caloric intake unless a physician requests that you do this because of a medical problem.
Do whatever you can to promote the self-esteem and self-respect of all of your children in intellectual, athletic, and social endeavors. A well-rounded sense of self and solid self-esteem are perhaps the best antidotes to dieting and disordered eating.

LIFT MINISTRIES
Coming to St. Timothy’s in March is LIFT!!“Catholic Worship for a new generation”. Join us on Tuesday evening, March 3, for another in the series of the LIFT Concerts!! LIFT uses modern elements such as professional lighting and sound, video screens displaying worship imagery and song lyrics, creative environments and the latest in contemporary praise and worship music performed by a live band to enhance the worship experience. The basic format of a LIFT night starts with upbeat praise and worship music followed by an inspirational talk given by a dynamic speaker speaking on that night’s theme. The night culminates with a time of Eucharistic Adoration enhanced by more praise and worship music. Our speaker will be Fr. Matt Williams. Check out the web site at Liftedhigher.com. Cardinal Sean O’Malley endorses Lift Ministries. See Cardinal Sean’s blog.
CONFIRMATION RETREAT TEAM

CATHOLIC YOUTH RALLY
Mark your calendar for Saturday, March 28 to be at Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood. The four parishes of Norwood and Westwood, St. Catherine’s, St. Timothy’s, St. Denis’s and St. Margaret Mary’s have put together in conjunction with Xaverian Brothers High School and Ursuline Academy an extraordinary Catholic Youth Rally from 2 PM to 9 PM. Although the planning began after the print of our YFM Syllabus, I have been talking to the students about this extraordinary event and I want to see all of our high school students in attendance. Cardinal Sean will be in attendance along with the keynote speaker, Luke Vercollone, former New England Revolution player. Luke has an extraordinary witness story to share about balancing his professional soccer career with his Catholic Faith. After the keynote address, the 500 students in attendance will be attending various Breakout Workshops. The breakout workshops will be limited, so please do not wait to register. Students should have received a registration packet this week at all YFM Classes. Another will be sent home via e-mail. Please do not wait to register!!! I know the popular workshops will be going fast.

We encourage you to participate at home with your family and loved ones.
