A Palm Sunday Prayer

Thou who art the soul and heart of life, save us from fear -- the fear of days and nights yet to be, the fear of the known and the unknown, the fear that builds high walls around our spirits and our lives, the fear that closes in and envelops us, the fear that nibbles at the edges of every satisfaction. Free us from fear of failure and success, of shame and pain, of death and fear of life as well. Open our eyes that we may see thy glory in humbleness and simplicity, commonness strewn generously across our path all our days. May we recognize thee riding upon a simple beast of burden, down the crooked streets of Jerusalem. May we not require the palms of victory and praise, the accolades and shouts of the multitude to see thy glory in gentleness, patience, loving kindness and, yes, pain and sometimes death. Thy way of peace -- of faith, hope, and love -- still is our path, our joy, our way. Amen.

“A Message From Our Pastor”

Dear Friends—

This weekend marks the most important week of our church year. The observances of Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday, Good Friday and culminating with the glorious Easter vigil service remind us of all that Christ endured so that we might one day have the opportunity for life eternal.

I have said before that we are so blessed here at St. Timothy’s to have wonderful Holy Week services. They are beautifully and meaningfully planned and enriched by the gifts of our parishioners who participate in so many ways and our choirs who lift up their voices in song and prayer and lead us to celebrate with great devotion these special moments in the church year.

I know that our lives are filled with so many “things”. Sometimes it seems that there are not enough hours in the day. But, down deep, we know that we all need to set priorities in our lives. If not, there is the danger that we DO a lot of things, but the quality of our lives and especially the spiritual quality of our lives can be diminished or lost.

I would most sincerely encourage you to try to make this next week a “holy” week, not just another week filled with things and ending with Easter. Please try to attend as many services as you can. Make that special effort to share these important moments in the life of Jesus, so that on Easter Sunday we might feel the presence of the Risen Lord in our lives and be filled with the peace and hope that Jesus alone can give.

In last week’s bulletin I mentioned that I would give you an update on the Archdiocesan Catholic Appeal. Our parish goal for this year is $73,500. As of this week we have pledges of $22,800 or about 31% of our target. I realize that the state of the economy is a cause for concern for many. This is a time when the gift we make will truly be a sacrificial gift for many. I think it is important to remember that even though the times are difficult for many of us—the times are truly desperate for so many who depend upon our Church for the very basics of life. Every gift—no matter the amount—will help. Thank you for considering this need.

Lastly—on Easter Sunday as happens on Christmas—the proceeds of the collection are used to fund the retirement fund and health care fund for the retired and disabled priests of the Archdiocese. Last Christmas we were able to send more than $22,000 from our parish to help with those needs. That was a substantial increase from the previous year.

We all know how expensive health care is, and obviously the numbers of our retired priests continue to grow. If you can help them by contributing generously to the Easter collection, I know you will have their gratitude and their prayers. Fr. Culloty
