Curriculum Newsletter Year 3 Terms 3 and 4 2017

Dear Parent/Guardian,

Welcome back to a new Spring Term.

Religious Education

In our topic ‘Journeys’ the children will explore the church celebrations through the year. They will remember and celebrate the life of Jesus. In the second topic we will be learning about ‘Listening and Sharing’. The children will consider the importance of listening to the Word of God and sharing in Holy Communion. In our last topic ‘Giving All’ the children will learn about Lent as a time of self-discipline and Easter as a celebration of growth into new life.

Maths

The topics we will be covering in the Spring Term are:

Place Value: 3 digit numbers on a number line, partitioning.

Fractions: finding quarters and halves, recognising fractions that are several parts of a whole.

Data: interpret and present data using bar graphs.

Addition and worded problems: using formal written methods (including carrying), calculating word problems with one or more steps.

Subtraction and worded problems: using formal written methods (including exchanging), calculating word problems with one or more steps.

3D Shape and Position and Direction: describe 3D shapes using their properties, construct from modelling materials.

Money: solving problems involving money.

Multiplication and worded problems: using times tables to find out missing number problems.

Division and worded problems: recognising division as the inverse of multiplication.

Time: reading analogue and digital clocks to the nearest minute, working out the duration of events.

2D Shape: finding the perimeter of 2D Shapes.

The children will be learning all their times tables this year so please practise these at home (Google Hit the Button, which is a good game to play).

English

The topics we will be covering in the Spring Term are:

Dinosaurs: we are learning to create information leaflets and commentaries about dinosaurs.

Harry Potter: we will look at report writing and make a newspaper report, school report and advertisement for Harry Potter World.

Stig of the Dump: Children will be looking at how to improve their sentence structure and use this as a model for their own adventure story.

Poetry: children will be looking at how we can create images using words.

Please ensure you read with your child each day and that you sign their reading record. The number of times you hear your child read is entered into our school data base so we can award prizes at the end of the year.

Science

Our first topic is ‘Rocks and Soils’ where the children will be investigating their different properties.

The second topic is ‘Light and Shadows’. The children will explore how shadows are formed.

Learning Journey

History.

The children will be studying the Stone Age and the Iron Age.

Geography.

The topic is ‘Extreme Weather’ which helps the children develop ideas about the weather conditions around the world.

Art/D.T

In Art the children will be creating 3D scenes related to different climates, making fossils out of plaster of Paris and making a volcano class model.

Computing

Children will be learning how to create music using music software, using Scratch to make a moving animation, contributing to online discussions, designing a questionnaire, collecting data and making a graph.

P.E

The focus for Term 3 will be on gymnastics and in term 4 the focus will be on circuit training.

Music

The children will continue with their recorder lessons.
