Scripture Readings for August 24, 2014

Twenty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time

Isaiah 22:19-23: The Lord’s servant will receive the key of the House of David. What the servant does, God confirms.

Psalm 138: 1-2, 2-3, 6, 8: "Lord, Your love is eternal; do not forsake the work of Your hands."

Romans 11: 33-36: The riches, wisdom, and knowledge of God are too deep for humans to fathom. God’s judgments are inscrutable and unsearchable. All things come from God, though God, and for God.

Matthew 16:13-20: At Caesarea Philippi, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Upon this rock I will build my church.” Then He gave to Peter the keys to heaven’s reign. Finally, Jesus ordered the disciples not to tell anyone that He was the Christ.

~ FROM THE PASTOR'S DESK ~

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Faith is a priceless gift from God. We can only come to know God through faith. A person without faith cannot come to know God. A person is called and chosen to use both human reason and the gift of faith to enter into relationship with God. Today’s gospel passage (Matt. 15:21-28) demonstrates the power of faith and reason, for the Canaanite woman in the gospel, whose daughter is tormented by a demon, knew that the Savior was sent to redeem Israel. This realization came to her by her upbringing and the instilling of information that became for her human knowledge. However, the gift of faith, and her response to this faith, enabled her to recognize Jesus as the Savior, and not just the Savior of Israel, but as Savior—Lord—of all. Through her cooperation with this gift of faith and her confession of faith in our Lord, Jesus granted her request.

How strong is our faith? Would our faith allow and welcome Jesus to work His healing in our lives? Faith in the Lord today is weak. Each and every day the world seems to distance itself from God and fills up its lack of faith by violence, terror and persecution. The world’s struggles will become our own if our faith is weak. We fill up in ourselves what should be faith-filled but become selfish and prideful when we allow ourselves to get caught up in the temporal problems of today. If our faith is weak, may we strengthen it by approaching the Lord in humility and asking Him to heal our faith. If our faith is hungry, may we nourish it by our reception of the sacraments. If our faith is craving for knowledge, listen to the wisdom of God in sacred scripture and in prayer, as well as continued education in the arts and sciences. Our coming to know God is a call, an invitation. Let us listen for this invitation and anxiously journey towards, and dwell in, God’s holy Presence.

The new academic year is upon us. This week our parish school commences and other students of our local community as well begin the new school year with hope and excitement. Let us pray for all students, especially those of and from our parish; their teachers, principals and school administrators: that this academic year will be blessed by God and that He will bestow many graces and blessings upon them.

~ RELIGIOUS RETIREMENT COLLECTION ~

Support religious communities. “Your generous contribution helps us to care for our retired sisters and enables our younger sisters to continue in active ministry,” writes a religious sister. Your gift to today’s collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious provides vital support for the retirement needs of senior sisters, brothers, and religious order priests. It also helps ensure that younger members can continue the good works of their elders!

~ STEWARDSHIP ~

In today’s first reading, the Lord speaks through the prophet Isaiah during a time of political dissolution and moral de-cline. The prophet had warned of God’s judgment against people for the feelings of self-importance they found in their possessions, and condemned them for various forms of economic injustice such as exploiting the poor and immigrants. Good stewards know that Isaiah’s message is as compelling today as it was in the time of the kingdom of Judah: Do the right thing. Offer justice and compassion toward others. Be honest in all your dealings. And remember to observe the day of the Lord.
