Job Title:Learning and Development Manager

Reports to: Chief Executive

Job Purpose

To enable St Peters to provide high quality palliative and end of life care to its patients, and to improve that provided in other healthcare settings, through the development and delivery of appropriate and cost effective learning programmes and activities for hospice staff and the wider health and social care community / workforce.

Principal Responsibilities

  1. Provide leadership for the development and implementation of the

Hospice’s education strategy and work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to ensure learning needs are identified and appropriately addressed.

  1. Lead and motivate the Education team members, enabling them to develop personally and professionally and to deliver a high standard of teaching and facilitated learning.

Detailed Responsibilities:

  1. Manage both the education team budget and central training budget. This includes working with line managers to help estimate spend on external education courses. In addition to managing spend, the role requires accurate estimating of income generated through external education.
  1. Design and delivery of training or education courses as necessary.
  1. Work with clinical leads and the Executive team to provide a development programme for hospice staff that is closely linked to achievement of organisational strategy and business plan.
  1. Through effective internal and external collaboration, identify opportunities for development of new areas of education activity and funding. Ensure that these courses are delivered on time and budget.
  1. Build effective relationships with all key stakeholders in the community, local and regional, to support the delivery of quality end of life care.
  1. Build and maintain formal links with Higher Education and Further Education providers and other educational organisations.
  1. Deliver an effective mandatory training programme for all staff through face to face and e-learning courses. Ensure effective monitoring and compliance with external quality standards and that courses are updated when required.
  1. Ensure the effective monitoring, assessment and evaluation of all activities and provide regular reports to stakeholders.
  1. Ensure that the Education team contributes to organisational forums including Clinical Governance, Clinical Forum and the Health and Safety Committee.
  1. As a departmental head, contribute to the strategic and operational management of St Peters Hospice.
  1. As a provider of QCF qualifications and an ILM centre, ensure all requirements for delivering these qualifications are met.
  1. Keep an overview of the Learning Management System to ensure it is used and managed effectively.
  1. Lead on all apprenticeship matters in order to maximise the benefit of apprentice levy payments. This will include identifying trainees and commissioning providers.
  1. Manage relationships with external training providers e.g. for the delivery of mandatory training courses.
  1. Look for opportunities to collaborate with other health care providers, including hospices, that may lead to more efficient ways of working.
