Processional Hymn 143 (Common Praise)

Angels, from the realms of glory, wing your flight o'er all the earth; you who sang creation's story, now proclaim Messiah's birth: come and worship, come and worship, worship Christ, the newborn King.

Shepherds in the fields abiding, watching o'er your flocks by night, God with us is now residing; yonder shines the infant Light: come and worship...

Sages, leave your contemplations; brighter visions beam afar; seek the great desire of nations; you have seen his natal star: come and worship...

Saints before the altar bending, watching long in hope

and fear, suddenly the Lord, descending, in his temple

shall appear: come and worship...

Though an infant now we view him, he shall fill the eternal throne, gather all the nations to him; every knee shall then bow down: come and worship...

Welcome and Call to Worship

Opening Prayer

Praise Hymn 145 (Common Praise)

All:Good King Wenceslas looked out on the feast of Stephen, when the snow lay round about, deep and crisp and even. Brightly shone the moon that night, though the frost was cruel, when a poor man came in sight, gathering winter fuel.

Men sing: “Hither, page, and stand by me, if thou knowest it, telling: yonder peasant, who is he? Where and what his dwelling?” Women sing: “Sire, he lives a good league hence, underneath the mountain, right against the forest fence, by St. Agnes’ fountain.”

Men: “Bring me flesh and bring me wine, bring me pine logs hither; thou and I will see him dine, when we bear them thither.” Page and monarch forth they went, forth they went together, through the rude wind’s wild lament, and the bitter weather.

Women: “Sire, the night is darker now, and the wind blows stronger: fails my heart, I know not how; I can go no longer.” Men: “Mark my footsteps, my good page; tread though in them boldly. Thou shat find the winter’s rage freeze thy blood less coldly.”

All:In his master’s steps he trod, where the snow lay dinted; heat was in the very sod which the saint had printed. Therefore, Christians all, be sure, wealth and rank possessing, ye who now will bless the poor, shall yourselves find blessing.

Leader: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all.

PEOPLE: AND ALSO WITH YOU.

Collect for Purity: (sung)

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden; cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify, your Holy name; through Christ our Lord, amen. Through Christ our Lord, amen.

Prayer of Confession:(said together)

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.

Absolution

Gradual Hymn: I Cannot Tell Why

(tune of Danny Boy)

I cannot tell why He whom angels worship should set His love upon the sons of men, or, why, as Shepherd, He should seek the wanderers, to bring them back, they know not how or when: but this I know, that He was born of Mary, when Bethl’hem’s manger was His only home. And that He lived at Nazareth and labored,

and so the Saviour, Saviour of the world is come.

I cannot tell how silently He suffered, as with His peace He graced this place of tears, or how His heart upon the cross was broken, the crown of pain to three and thirty years: but this I know, He heals the broken hearted. And stays our sin and calms our lurking fear. And lifts the burden from the heavy laden, for yet the Saviour, Saviour of the world is here.

I cannot tell how all the lands shall worship, when at His bidding ev’ry storm is stilled, or who can say how great the jubilation when all the hearts of men with love are filled: but this I know, the skies will thrill with gladness, and myriad, myriad human voices sing, and earth to heav’n, and heav’n to earth will answer, at last the Saviour, Saviour of the world is King!

The Apostles' Creed: (said together)

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Offertory Hymn: Love Has Come

Love has come – a light in the darkness! Love explodes in the Bethlehem skies. See, all heaven has come to proclaim it; hear how their song of joy arises: Love! Love! Born unto you, a Saviour! Love! Love! Glory to God on high!

Love is born! Come share in the wonder; Love is God now asleep in the hay. See the glow in the eyes of His mother; What is the name her heart is saying? Love! Love! Love is the name she whispers; Love! Love! Jesus, Immanuel.

Love has come - He never will leave us! Love is life everlasting and free. Love is Jesus within and among us; Love is the peace our hearts are seeking. Love! Love! Love is the gift of Christmas; Love! Love! Praise to You, God on high!

During Communion please maintain a quiet attitude of prayer or join in quietly singing the following hymns. Prayer ministry is offered at the lobby doors during Communion.

Hymn 429 - Of the Father's love begotten ere the worlds began to be, he is Alpha and Omega, he the source, the ending he, of the things that are and have been, and that future years shall see, evermore and evermore.

At his word the worlds were framed. He commanded, it was done: heaven and earth and depths of ocean in their threefold order one; all that grows beneath the shining of the moon and burning sun, evermore and evermore.

O that birth for ever blessed! When the virgin, full of grace, by the Holy Ghost conceiving, bare the Saviour of our race, and the babe, the world's redeemer, first revealed his sacred face, evermore and evermore.

This is he whom seers in old time chanted of with one accord, whom the voices of the prophets promised in their faithful word; now he shines, the long-expected; let creation praise its Lord, evermore and evermore.

O ye heights of heaven, adore him; angel hosts, his praises sing; all dominions, bow before him, and extol our God and King; let no tongue on earth be silent, every voice in concert ring, evermore and evermore.

Christ to thee, with God the Father, and, O Holy Ghost, to thee, hymn and chant and high thanksgiving and unwearied praises be, honour, glory and dominion and eternal victory, evermore and evermore.

There Is A Redeemer

There is a Redeemer Jesus, God's own son, precious Lamb of God, Messiah, Holy One. Thank you, O my Father, for giving us your son, and leaving your Spirit till the work on earth is done.

Jesus, my Redeemer, name above all names, precious Lamb of God, Messiah, hope for sinners slain. Thank you, O my Father...

When I stand in glory I will see his face, and there I'll serve my King for ever in that Holy Place. Thank you, O my Father... {Melody Green, c. 1982, Birdwing/Cherry Lane Music Pub. Co., by permission CCLI #459447}

Prayer After Communion:

Priest: Source of truth and joy, may we who have received the gift of divine life always follow the way of your Son. This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.

People: Glory to God, whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine. Glory to God from generation to generation, in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Blessing(followed by sung “Amen”)

Recessional Hymn 140 (Common Praise)

It came upon the midnight clear, that glorious song of old, from angels bending near the earth to touch their harps of gold: "Peace on the earth, to all good will from heaven's most gracious King!" The world in solemn stillness lay to hear the angels sing.

Still through the cloven skies they come with peaceful wings unfurled; and still their heavenly music floats o'er all the weary world; above its sad and lowly plains they bend on hovering wing, and ever o'er its Babel sounds the blessed angels sing.

Yet with the woes of sin and strife the world has suffered long; beneath the angel strain have rolled two thousand years of wrong; and we amid our wars hear not the words of peace they bring; O listen now, and still your strife to hear the angels sing.

And you, beneath life’s crushing load, whose forms are bending low, who toil along the climbing way with painful steps and slow; look now, for glad and golden hours come swiftly on the wing: O rest beside the weary road and hear the angels sing.

For, lo! the days are hastening on, by prophets seen of old, when with the ever-circling years shall come the time foretold: when the new heaven and earth shall own the Prince of Peace their King, and the whole world send back the song which now the angels sing.

Dismissal:

Leader: Go forth into the world, rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit.

People: Thanks be to God.
