Summer term newsletter no. 8 – Monday 27 June 2016

Please read!

Dear Parents

Up-date since the last newsletter:

·  Thank you to everyone who came along to our Open Morning on 14 June and for all your comments about seeing the school in action. The choir were exceptional and the Year 6 ‘Meet & Greet’ team did a superb job.

·  Year 3 and Year 4 worked with Justine from Cafod last week exploring issues surrounding the rights and responsibilities we have as citizens. Justine was very impressed with both classes and their ability to work together.

·  Many thanks to the School Council for organising the Fairtrade Snack Event. Mrs Greenlees, our local representative, was very appreciative. It looks like the School Council are now on track for a Fairtrade Award for their efforts!

·  The Dance from the Heart Roadshow was a huge success. Every single child was involved in the session and performed the dance routine superbly. We all enjoyed the BMX stunt riders!

·  A HUGE well done to every pupil in Year 1 and Year 2 who joined in with 100% enthusiasm at their Sports Day on 17 June.

·  A fantastic night was had by everyone who came along to the PTFA Summer Bash. The event was sponsored by some of our parents, so thank you very much. The event raised a total of £1573.00 which is AMAZING - HUGE THANKS! Special thanks to the families who came back on Saturday morning to tidy up, this was much appreciated.

·  Our Key Stage 2 Euro ’16 Football Tournament was held last Monday. The sun shone, the teams were keen and the whole school watched the final. Thanks to Mr Mears and Mr Gordon for organising the event and to Joe Dineen and Nicky Murphy for being excellent referees.

·  We said “au revoir” to our French visitors on Friday. They had spent a week with us and were sad to go back to Nimes. Many thanks to all the families who hosted and special thanks to Mrs Quilliam and Mrs Powell for their hard work to make sure the week was a success.

·  The Year 5 Crown Green Bowling Team were in action on Friday for their first round of games against Longton Primary School. The tournament continues on Friday 1 July. Good luck teams!

·  Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, the weather beat us on Friday 24 June, so Year 3 and Year 4 were unable to have their Sports Day. The new date is set for MONDAY 4 JULY at 2.15 pm.

Miss Smith Charity Run

Miss Smith is raising money for the NSPCC, a charity which St Oswald’s is a major champion of. She will be running on Saturday 2 July in the 5km NSPCC Colour Summer Run. If you wish to sponsor her, please send in your donation to the school office. We will let you know how she does!

Financial Matters

Please can I again remind parents to ensure that their ParentPay account remains in CREDIT. Following an upgrade to the ParentPay site, pupils’ accounts must firstly be ‘topped-up’ with a single payment and then payments can be allocated to payment items, i.e. school meals, Early Birds, etc. as necessary. I would also be grateful if Year 6 parents ensured that their child’s accounts are cleared before the end of the term. Thank you.

A message from Miss Galea

A beginners’ guitar group will begin in September and letters have already been issued to current Year 2, Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5 pupils. If you would like your child to join the guitar group in September, please return the form to school ASAP. Please note that by returning the form, this indicates a firm commitment to your child joining the guitar group in September and ensuring that payment is made promptly. Further details are available by emailing

Lancashire Science Festival Family Day

This is a fantastic event and free of charge and is being held on Saturday 2 June from 9.00 am-5.00 pm on the University’s Preston Campus. www.lancashiresciencefestival.co.uk for more information. Well worth a visit.

And finally …

Governors have appointed Miss Bennison to join the EYFS team next year. Miss Bennison will be an excellent addition to our staff team here at St Oswald’s and is very excited and looking forward to starting in September.

As always, if you have any queries or concerns, please do get in touch and we will always to do our best to help.

Yours sincerely
