Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time
GOD’S LOVE FOR ALL PEOPLE
Following their exile to Babylon, the people of Israel came home to find other banished people living in Israel. It was, therefore, not uncommon for foreigners to attempt to come to the Temple to worship. In the reading from Isaiah, the Jewish people are urged to welcome the foreigners and encourage their worship, for it was clearly the understanding of the author of Isaiah that everyone would be redeemed. The Jewish people had a strong sense of what was right and wrong and how to live just lives. This did not mean they had to embrace the religions of others, only to accept the people themselves and recognize that they and all people were entitled to God’s salvation.
Paul’s Epistle to the Romans is equally evangelizing. He states that his ministry and God’s love stretch out to all people, not just the Israelites. Frustrated at times with the Jewish people’s rejection and refusal to listen, Paul turned to the Gentiles. All people, Paul explains, have sinned against God. Only because of our disobedience can God show love and mercy for all people. God loves us, and without exclusion each human being can claim the gift of salvation.
SALVATION FOR ALL
More severe than the other readings, the Gospel nonetheless asserts that salvation is for all people. It is the amazing and intense faith of the Canaanite woman that catches our attention in the Gospel. The disciples saw her as a nuisance and someone to remove from Jesus’ presence. Jesus clearly considered his mission at this point particularly to the Israelites. Yet the woman knew that Jesus could heal her daughter and God’s healing is, indeed, for all of us. The woman was so sure of Jesus and God’s love that she recognized that something greater than crumbs would come someday to those outside the Jewish faith. Each of us in our own calling is challenged to multiply and supplement the crumbs generously, making a nourishing meal to show all people of the world God’s great love.

The Pastor’s Corner
Dear brothers and sisters,
We once again gather to offer and participate in the eternal sign of our salvation in Christ, the Holy Mass. Like the woman in the gospel reading this Sunday we come to Him in thanksgiving, in petition, in loving praise. He does not turn away from us but comes to each of us that we be strengthen by His very life given in this Holy Communion. Let us carry this great gift of Christ within us into every aspect of our lives, to everyone we meet. In this way our great faith will be revealed and our love of God and neighbor made real.
We have been asked by our Holy Father, Pope Francis and by our Bishops to offer prayers for the people of Northern Iraq as they face the terror surrounding them. We remember especially our brothers and sisters in the Faith in Iraq and elsewhere in the middle east, that our good and gracious God will protect them and bring an end to war and religious hatred.
Parents please remember that your vocation as fathers and mothers is to offer your children the opportunity to grow in their relationship and knowledge of God, the one with whom you cooperated in creating life. We as your family of faith assist you through our faith formation classes, and our weekly celebration of the Mass. Give them the very best by your example in attending our Sunday liturgies and working with them in their study of the faith. The Rite of Baptism acknowledges that you are the first teachers in the faith and the Church prays the you be the best teachers by what you say and do. God bless you in your vocation as the very best parents.

In today’s first reading, the Lord speaks through the prophet Isaiah during a time of political dissolution and moral de-cline. The prophet had warned of God’s judgment against people for the feelings of self-importance they found in their possessions, and condemned them for various forms of economic injustice such as exploiting the poor and immigrants. Good stewards know that Isaiah’s message is as compelling today as it was in the time of the kingdom of Judah: Do the right thing. Offer justice and compassion toward others. Be honest in all your dealings. And remember to observe the day of the Lord.

Later in the summer we will begin a program to help Anglos and Latinos to get to know one another. We will be asking families to voluntarily pair up with another family. On a regular basis (weekly) the pairs will be asked to share together in some way. Perhaps attend mass together, have a cookout, go to Charlestown State Park, or simply stop by for a visit. There will occasionally be organized opportunities for the family pares to share with all of those in the program on a parish level. Our goal is to nurture understanding and unity among our parishioners.

We want to thank our students involved in this liturgy: Remember Faith is a gift from God. Faith Formation is a life-long growth process. We encourage parents to attend Mass with their children. This enables the children to integrate what they learn in their Faith Formation classes with weekly participation in the liturgy.
We provide a minimum of thirty instruction hours, which is the Archdiocese’s minimum standard. It is our hope that participants (parents and children) will attend all the sessions provided. However, we do realize that illness and special family events (death and weddings, for example) do happen.

RCIA will begin September 16th. In an era of corporate restructuring, try an organization where top management hasn’t changes in 2000 years. “The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults” is an adult convert program. If you know of any adults who might be considering becoming Catholic, invite them to our program. St. Michael and St. Francis work together with St. Paul and St. Joe Hill on the program. This is also a great opportunity for Catholic Adults (18 years or older) to review their faith and/or to prepare for the Sacrament of Confirmation.
St. Michael and St. Francis Xavier Sacrament Preparation: A child (grade 1 through high school) must be enrolled and attend Faith Formation classes the YEAR BEFORE and YEAR of receiving the Sacrament of First Reconciliation, First Eucharist or Confirmation.. Baptism of children under school age requires the parents to meet with the pastor before the sacrament is received.
