St Michael’s Catholic High School Proposed Curriculum Offer 2017 - 2018

St Michael’s Catholic High School strives to provide each student with a 2 year programme of study designed to realise their full potential. The following is the advice and guidance we use at Enrolment to ensure students are both on the right courses and likely to gain high level success.

General curriculum advice and guidance for 2017 entry – (Provisional October 2016)

Basic Entry Requirements for A level Course

For 1 A level Grade 5 in both GCSE English Language & Maths and an average APS of 5

For 2 A levels Grade 5 in both GCSE English Language and Maths and an APS of 5.5

For 3 A levels Grade 5 in both GCSE English Language and Maths and an APS of 6

Basic Entry Requirements for vocational/coursework based qualifications:

Grade 4 in both GCSE English Language and Maths + 3 grade Cs in other subjects (which could include English Literature grade 4)

Provisional Subject Entry Requirements for 2017/18

The following list provides a guide to entry criteria for each subject at St Michael’s Catholic High School and is used when working with students to provide a suitable programme of study. The entry criteria is designed around a student’s most likely chance of success; we want to avoid enrolling students on unsuitable courses and not being able to succeed. Students who meet these entry criteria are guaranteed a place on the course, subject to meeting expectation when completing summer workbook tasks. Details of subject specific entry requirements can be found on the reverse of this document.

Religious Studies / A*- B in GCSE Religious Studies.
Art / Grade B in GCSE Art or Graphic Design & at least a grade 5 in English Language.
Biology / A* or A in GCSE Biology, grade 6 or above in GCSE Mathematics is also required.
Business Studies / Minimum B in GCSE Business Studies (if taken)
As well as grade 5 in English Language & grade 6 in Mathematics.
Chemistry / Chemistry GCSE at A* or A, or a Double award science GCSE at A*. A Mathematics GCSE grade 6 is also desirable.
Computing / Minimum A* or A in GCSE Computing.
English Literature / Minimum grade 5 & grade 6 in either combination of GCSE English Literature & GCSE English Language.
Extended Project Qualification / Offered to all Year 12 students on a voluntary basis.
French / Minimum grade B in GCSE French (entered for all higher tiers)
and grade B in the written controlled assessments.
Geography / Minimum B in GCSE Geography plus at least 4 other A*- C passes (including English Language & Mathematics at grade 5 or higher).
Graphic Communication / A*-B GCSE Graphic Design. A*-B GCSE Art – subject to portfolio check.
History / B in GCSE History (if taken)
or grade 7 in GCSE English Language (if History not studied).
Mathematics / A grade 7 or above in GCSE Mathematics & a grade 9 at GCSE Mathematics for Further Mathematics.
Media Studies / Minimum grade 5 in GCSE English Language OR Literature.
Photography / 5 A*- C GCSE passes, including grade 5 in English Language.
Physical Education / Grade B GCSE Physical Education Theory paper (if studied) or grade B in Science (if not studied) plus grade 5 in English & in Mathematics.
Physics / Physics GCSE at A* or A, or a Double award science GCSE at A*. A Mathematics GCSE grade 7 is also desirable.
Product Design / A*-B grade in GCSE Product Design. A*-B grade GCSE Graphic Communication – subject to portfolio check.
Psychology / 5 A*- C GCSE passes including Mathematics & English at grade 5 & 6 (either way round) & a grade B in one of the Sciences.
Sociology / Grade A*-C pass in GCSE Science is preferable & Grade 5 in GCSE Mathematics & English.
Spanish / At least a Grade B at GCSE & entered for all high tiers & a grade B in the written controlled assessment.
Sixth Form Physical Education / Compulsory for all Sixth Formers.
BTEC courses
Applied Law / 5 grade C GCSEs, including English Language at grade 4, having studied History or Business at GCSE would be helpful.
Applied Science / At least 5 grade C GCSEs including English Language, Mathematics at grade 4 & Double Award Science.
Business / At least 5 grade C GCSEs including English Language & Mathematics at grade 4.
Creative Digital Media / 5 A*-C including English Language & Mathematics at grade 4.
Information Technology / A Merit or grade C at GCSE level (if taken),
Minimum grade 4 in English Language & Mathematics.
Sport / Merit or above on the BTEC Next Generation Sport course, minimum grade C GCSE PE, GCSE grade C in Science & grade 4 in English Language & Mathematics.
