Gifting a Child
There are some wonderful stories of hospitality in the Scriptures. The description of Elisha, on his travels, being provided with his own room, complete with bedside lamp, conjures up a comforting picture. His kind hostess and her elderly husband receive a rich reward for their generosity. The gift of a child must have been far beyond their wildest dreams, but follows a pattern throughout the Old and New Testaments in which the gift of a child is God’s ultimate blessing. The gift of Jesus to our world provides us all with the perfect model of hospitality. In his gospel St John explains that Jesus and his Father wish to make their home with us, so when we hear Jesus suggesting that we must not prefer our earthly parents to his invitation to be part of our heavenly family, we must be careful not to draw the wrong conclusions.
Jesus recognises that it is easy for us to be distracted as we struggle with the problems that beset us and that even those closest to us can be obstacles to us accompanying him on the way of salvation, the way of the cross. The cross is an extraordinary paradox. It provides us with an horrendous symbol, a reminder of the brutality of human beings. And yet it becomes a symbol, a reminder of the brutality of human beings. And yet it becomes a symbol of triumph with Christ’s resurrection on Easter Sunday.
St Paul discovered this and understood that through his baptism he entered into the mystery both of the death of Christ Jesus and the new kind of life he won for us in the resurrection. And he was very aware of the fact that he was already living this new life – “dead to sin but alive for God in Christ Jesus”. Once we grasp this then hopefully we can see everything in a new light. We live with the paradox of the cross, which is present in so many different guises, including the tensions that can arise between parents and children. The further paradox is that we have to let go of this life to find the new life and then we see one another more clearly as children of God, for whom even a cup of cold water offered in the Lord’s name will receive its reward. Graciously respond to the Lord’s request to make his home with you. Be as lavish as you can in offering hospitality and do not be surprised when the Lord in turn richly rewards you. Be on the lookout for today’s prophets. They are the holy men and women in whose presence God is revealed to you. They are the ones who show us how to carry the cross with patience, who are gracious and hospitable because they realise that whatever they do to the least of their brothers and sisters, they do to the Lord.
