ST JOSEPH’S CATHOLICHIGH SCHOOL

BUSINESS & ENTERPRISECOLLEGE

DETAILS FOR THE POST OF

SITE MANAGER

November 2014

Dear Colleague

Thank you for expressing an interest in the advertised post and I hope you find the details in our application pack informative. St Joseph’s is a school which is full of excellent people, both staff and students. This has come about through a deliberate policy of ours to ensure that relationships at all levels are positive, challenging and productive. Hence we are a happy school. Attainment in all its forms is central to what we do but we know that ultimately improvement only comes about as a result of the quality of relationships that exist between staff and pupils. Children feel valued here, staff feel a sense of support and parents see us as a trustworthy partner in bringing their sons and daughters to their full potential.

Our school is at a critical juncture. We were inspected in November 2013 and the school was judged to 'require improvement'. We are absolutely determined to reverse that judgement as quickly as possible and you will play a vital role in helping to bring this about.

The Ofsted report challenged the school to improve the performance of the 'most able' pupils, and addressing this is at the heart of our School Improvement Plan. However the Inspection also judged that the ' quality of teaching ' and 'behaviour and safety' were 'good' and as these are critical aspects of any school, I am very confident that we already have in place really strong foundations on which to build our future success.

We have recently received the HMI monitoring visit report and this acknowledged that the school has been quick to identify and implement appropriate strategies.

All of our attainment data points towards improved performance and your appointment will be important and crucial in bringing this about.

The school faces challenges for two other reasons. Locally our two neighbouring schools are likely to merge and become an ‘Academy’ and no doubt they will seek to re-position themselves in the ‘market’. A University Technical College (UTC) will be up and running by September 2014 and this will offer 500+ places to students aged between 14 and 19. All of this will mean that parents and pupils will have greater choice and therefore as a school we must ensure that we deliver high quality provision to all of our learners.

At this point in time there is no likelihood of St Joseph’s becoming an Academy. It is not the policy of our Diocese to do this but more importantly I do not feel it is a necessary path for us to go down.

Our school is very well positioned to respond positively to all of the likely changes around us. We have a central town location, we have an excellent building, we have supportive parents, talented staff and the vast majority of our pupils are polite, well behaved and hard working. In other words we have all the ingredients necessary for success.

Every school faces challenges that go with the job. I hope it is a challenge which appeals to you and if it does, I would very much welcome your application.

Yours sincerely

Mr T Ryan

An additional allowance is paid for working Sundays. We normally close for Bank holidays and over Christmas and New Year. We have a rota system which means that as a general rule this postholder will be required to work one weekend in four. You will also work alternate shifts either earlies or lates and there will be days where both Site Managers hours overlap so they can do jobs that require two people. There is some flexibility so that staff can change shifts with their colleagues by arrangement. You will be expected to cover for holidays. Holiday must be taken in school holiday times, by arrangement with the team.

There is a lot of routine work which is carried out during the day. One off jobs tend to be done in the evenings and at weekends. We are a Community school and have a lot of activities going on outside of the school day. These include users of the All Weather Pitch, the Multigym. Adult Education classes, meetings, events in the Hall, exercise classes, Brownies, Cubs etc.

Due to financial constraints we carry out a lot of maintenance work in school ourselves including painting, joinery work routine maintenance, work in connection with Health and Safety, electrical testing etc. So applicants should have experience of carrying out some of this work.

We have a van which can be used for movement of things on and off site so a clean driving licence is essential.

Protective clothing will be provided for you whilst at work.

Applicants must enjoy working with people especially young people. You will need to have good communication skills as you will come into contact with people particularly outside the school day where on many occasions you will be the schools ambassador. You will need to be able to prioritise work and see jobs that need doing. Most of all you will need a sense of humour.

The School

St Joseph’s Catholic High School is an improving school on all fronts. Standards of attainment have risen over the years. Last year’s results were 57.2% including English and Maths. There has been inward investment in building of well over £1.5 million pounds over the last 8 years so that virtually all areas are now fully modernised. Pupil intake numbers are growing with our standard number of 150 being reached in each of the last 2 years.

It is an exciting time for our school which still retains a ‘close family feel’. We are still relatively small (666 on role) but as such it gives all who teach and learn here a chance to enter positive productive relationships. As a staff we have worked very hard to be consistent on behaviour, uniform and our parental involvement. This work is paying off and we are beginning to see real signs of dramatic improvement.

Although the school is situated in an area of social and economic deprivation we have very high expectations and aspirations for our pupils. We want them to go on and be successful in whatever context they find themselves and we are determined to make this ‘ideal’ – ‘real’.

Business & Enterprise

The successes the school has enjoyed over recent years have led to a successful application for Specialist Schools Status. School was designated as a Business & Enterprise College September 2003.

The significant additional resources and change in curricular focus are leading all departments to address teaching and learning to develop competency as well as content. Our capital project included the building of a new enterprise centre to be used by pupils, adult learners and primary partners. A state of the art virtual learning environment will be based in our enterprise centre so that teaching and learning approaches can take full advantage of world class ICT facilities.

We see ourselves as the education hub for business and enterprise in the wider community, providing enhanced opportunities for lifelong learning. In so doing we will be a significant contributor to the social, economic regeneration of West Cumbria.

Staff Development

St Joseph’s, a learning school, is a people centred school that fosters individual growth and ownership of change. It creates greater individual responsibility and interdependency. Since learning is the essence of change, the continuous learning of each member of staff lies at the heart of a learning school. Staff development is the generator that powers the school and enables it to flourish in the changing environment.

The development of staff at St Joseph’s is a conscious and continuous process which is:

Directed by the school development plan.

Founded on principles of effective adult learning.

Integrated into the job.

Predominantly internally based.

Incorporates a wide range of learning modes.

Essential to the growth of the school.

Uses Managers as Coaches.

Driven by individual needs of individuals and the school.

Emphasises outcomes.

The development of staff is fostered through the Appraisal system which involves setting objectives, monitoring progress and reviewing achievements, learning opportunities and within a learning climate.

In service training days are usually split throughout the year into 2 days for all staff at the start of the school year and the remainder spread throughout the year.

The Governors and staff at the school are currently working towards being awarded the Investors in People standard.

Conditions of Service

  • The above responsibilities are subject to the general duties and responsibilities contained in the statement of Conditions of Employment.
  • These duties may be amended as necessary at the discretion of the Head teacher in light of the future development of the school.
  • The creation of a truly Christian environment in which the Gospel is lived and experienced by all members of its community, is the central aim of St Joseph’s. All applicants are expected to be supportive of this central aim.

Additional Features of Teaching in St Joseph’s Catholic High

  • Each department head is linked with a member of SMT to develop the strategic direction of their work.
  • There is a strong culture of sharing best practice in the department. This has helped colleagues develop their professional competence and is set in a developmental culture.

Closing date for applications is 3rd December 2014, interviews will be held on 9th December 2014 .
