Position: Acquisitions/Catalog Librarian

Grade: 7

Reports to: Director, Assistant Director

Hours: Exempt Full-time Position (flexible work hours may include nights and weekends)

Nature of Work: The candidate in this position would be expected to maintain the highest

performance standards and quality of information intheordering,claims, cancellations, and

cataloging of materials and the role of overseeing the finances and expenditures for the library’s

collection budget and purchasing materials for the collectionsystem-wide. The Acquisitions

Librarian/Cataloger works in the technical services department and must possess a thorough

knowledge of library cataloging principles and practices

Duties (include but not limited to):

  • To supervise the technical services department.
  • To maintain overall collection development of all materials: books, DVDs, and books-on-cd, or electronic books.
  • Select and orders books, audiobooks, periodicals, DVD, electronic books and othermaterials for system.
  • Review publishers announcements catalogs and compiles list of publications to bepurchased.
  • Compare selections with catalog orders-in-process to avoid duplication.
  • Circulate selection lists to appropriate department heads for comments and input.
  • Select and order from vendors, individuals or websites on basis of such factors as

discount, allowance, delivery dates.

  • Compile statistics on purchases, like total purchases, average price, and fund allocations.
  • To maintain inventory of materials at all branches.
  • To create list of the location of materials.
  • To coordinate weeding of collection at all branches.
  • To select and maintain rental book collection.
  • To follow policies and procedures in the library policy manual and personnel handbook.
  • To work cooperatively and in professional harmony with staff members, administrators, and the community.
  • To perform other library related duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • MLS or MLIS from an ALA accredited library school.
  • Must have experience in the use of computers and electronic applications.
  • At least (5) five years library work experience, preferable in cataloging.
  • Knowledge of literature for adults, young adults and children is required; including

materials selection, reference and readers advisory.

  • Experience scheduling staff, coordinating the work of others and management of a significant project is desirable.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

Knowledge of:

  • Public library principles, organization, objectives, trends, materials, services and practices.
  • Current interest of adults and young adult literature and materials.
  • Community informational and recreational needs for library materials.
  • The role of computerized bibliographic databases and searching techniques, electronic reference, online public access catalogs and integrated library systems.
  • The principles of selection, de-selection and evaluation of library collections.

Ability and Skillsto:

  • Develop and apply library procedures and policies and other professional knowledge to

the practical problems of the job.

  • Establish and maintain courteous and effective working relationships with the community.
  • Analyze and respond to community interests and concerns regarding library collections.
  • Prioritize work and exercise independent, sound judgment.
  • Communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Understand budgeting procedures.
