Scotland’s first modern hospice, St Columba’s Hospice first opened its doors in 1977. Over the years it has grown and evolved into an exemplary provider of specialist palliative care for thousands of people with life-limiting illnesses in Edinburgh and the Lothians annually, while also providing support to their relatives and loved ones. We currently have the following opportunity to join the Hospice team:

Domestic Chargehand

Band 2 £16,532 – £18,903 pro-rata, per annum + unsocial hours enhancement + Pension

Part- time 22.50 hours per week, over 5 days, Monday to Friday, on a back shift: 14:00 – 18.30.

We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated person to join our friendly, hard-working Domestic team. Domestic Chargehand will play an important role in delivering front line services within the Hospice to ensure a clean and safe environment. You will be involved in a daily allocation of work for domestic back shift. You will assist the supervisor in running a team of Domestic Staff, maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and hygiene at all times.

Previous experience in supervising staff and cleaning are required alongside the ability to work on your own initiative and as part of a team. You will be PC literate and able to prioritise and organise daily duties following departmental procedures. Good communication skills and time keeping are also essential for the role.

Experience with cleaning equipment or working within a healthcare setting would be an advantage, as would SVQ or BICS qualifications, although not essential. You must be prepared to work shift patterns which also include weekends.

2. JOB PURPOSE

Responsible for the day-to-day organisation of Domestic Back Shift within designated areas of St Columba’s Hospice.
Monitor and maintain service quality
Ensure delivery of a high quality service providing the maximum value from available resources.
3. DIMENSIONS
Responsible for the day to day supervision and co-ordination of staff including allocation of tasks to domestic team.
Ø  Supervises quality & monitors work within a back shift
Ø  Prioritising and supervising work load.
Ø  Deals with interruptions and re organising tasks accordingly
Ø  This post carries Supervisory responsibility in first line management
Ø  Provide Domestic Support to all staff & departments
Ø  Ensure economical use of available resources i.e. Staff / equipment / products

Ø  Maintain a clean Hospice reducing the risk of cross contamination

6. KEY RESULT AREAS

Ø  Ensuring that agreed standards of cleanliness are met and maintained in all areas through stringent monitoring
Ø  Monitoring the processes used in the cleaning of all areas
Ø  Supervise and support staff in areas of responsibility by frequent visits to ensure that the required standards are maintained and that corrective action is taken immediately
Ø  Allocation of work and supervision of staff within a back Shift
Ø  Responding to changes in normal routine and adjusting work schedules as required and prioritising as appropriate
Ø  Reviewing the condition of furniture, fabric and equipment and reporting any maintenance requirements to the Stewards Department
Ø  Provide training and guidance to team members as required e.g. on policies and procedures
Ø  Ensuring observance of safe working methods and good hygiene practice in accordance with Organisational policies and procedures
Ø  The appropriate control of resources throughout the department
Ø  Ensuring the security and proper use of equipment and materials
Ø  Assisting with a” hands on” role
Ø  Liaise with Nurses to deal with problems / complaints / queries which may have arisen (daily / weekly)

Ø  Cover for other Domestics as required
Ø  Any other appropriate duties as directed by the Domestic Supervisor

Ø  The post holder will have support of the Domestic Supervisor on a day-to-day basis

10. MOST CHALLENGING/DIFFICULT PARTS OF THE JOB

The Domestic Chargehand works as part of a multi-disciplinary team within wards departments and is challenged daily with the task of cleaning areas to a standard. Where there is a lot of activity change can occur at a short notice due to patients needs. Adaptability, flexibility and the ability to work around other specialities that has direct responsibility for direct patient care. Re allocates work to cover unplanned absence.

12. PHYSICAL, MENTAL, EMOTIONAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS OF THE JOB
The post is physically demanding therefore a good level of fitness is required.
Manual handling training is provided as mandatory for all staff in order that tasks can be completed safely.
Physical skills: required to be multi –skilled in various tasks and use of equipment & require to be skilled in the handling of machinery so to avoid injuring themselves or others
Physical effort: The physical requirements can be quite demanding and staff will spend most of their time on their feet, there is a degree of lifting and handling. Staff are exposed to wide variations in temperature and underfoot condition
Mental demands: required to concentrate for long periods of time whilst working in patient related areas
Emotional demands: The nature of the service requires staff to work to strict time schedules
Working in ward areas and dealing with patients can be stressful. Dealing with complaints from patients, staff and visitors.
Working Conditions: Frequently highly unpleasant working conditions, eg direct contact with disposable soluble bags containing soiled foul linen, toilets, showers, sluices etc.

Previous experience in a Domestic Services environment is essential. However, this need not have been in a Healthcare environment.
Previous Supervisory experience is desirable but not necessary, as training would be given.

PENSION: We offer a generous Hospice Pension. The amount that Hospice will pay will depend on your age, as shown in the table below.

NOTICE PERIOD: 4 weeks

PAYMENT OF SALARY: The successful candidate’s salary will be paid monthly direct into his/her bank/building society account and he/she will be required to open an account if such facility is not currently in operation

ANNUAL LEAVE: 27 days per annum on commencement

29 days per annum after 5 years service

33 days per annum after 10 years service

PUBLIC HOLIDAYS: 8 days per annum

Part-time staff will receive a pro-rata entitlement for annual leave and public holidays combined. Reckonable Hospice, NHS and Council service may be credited for annual leave purposes.

BANK ANNUAL LEAVE: Bank workers receive a payment of 12.55% in addition to their hourly rate for holiday pay

SMOKING POLICY: There is a ban on staff smoking in Hospice premises

PRE-EMPLOYMENT CHECKS: All appointments are subject to verification of qualifications, medical assessment, and the receipt of satisfactory references. This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and therefore an Enhanced Criminal Records check will be required.
