Patrick: On my soapbox

Rotary Community Corps

Do we have a golden opportunity to create a Rotary Community Corp at Lwaleng Primary School? This former farm school has been inundated with pupils (learners in the new-speak) since our club, through the hard work of George Muller and Liz Mackintosh, built four new classrooms and a library. Have a look at you want to know more. The problem may be that we will have difficulty identifying who the ‘community’ of Lwaleng really is. It seems that children come from far and wide. The vision of a corps of people working to help themselves is very appealing in this era of entitlement. Can we manage this?

A word from the editor….

Many people have asked on numerous occasions- “Why is the Rotary Club of White River so successful and why does it keep growing when many other clubs are declining in numbers?”

I have come to a conclusion the last three weeks as to why this is the case.

Everyone in the club cares for each other – the care, concern, compassion and love we have felt from all the members in the last three weeks has been palpable. Not a day has gone by without a message, phone call or email offering support and/or assistance.

The fellowship we have built up through projects and fellowship functions has forged a bond amongst the members and this is shown by the care that we have for each other.

Thank you to each and every one of you who has sent messages and encouraging emails and also to all those who have helped us in any way. Words cannot express how deeply moved we have been by the response we have had by everyone in the community, but particularly in our Rotary community.

Monday’s meeting – 8th February

What happened?

  • The club stood for a moment’s silence in memory of Branda Hyson, Brian’s Mum who passed away last week.
  • Welcome back, Malcolm. It is good to see you looking so well and back with us!
  • Warren is back home but not feeling great after his op. Gavin is on the mend and his leg is feeling a little better according to reports.
  • Judy is getting solar lights for matric students so that they can study at night. They will be handed out next month.
  • Youth Exchange – a most successful international evening was held last night (Sunday 14th) with presentations by the in bound and out bound students. Interviews have taken place and 8 students have been selected to go on Short term exchange.
  • Camp Quality – there will be a meeting next Tuesday evening – 23rd at 5:30 at Heuglins.
  • 29 February – fellowship curry evening at Heuglins.
  • Don reported that he, Mike and JD have made some strestle table for a pre school and they want to make log seats for the children. Anyone cutting down a tree, let don have some logs – about 300mm in diameter and between 200 and 450 mm tall.
  • Brian reminded people to log in to My Rotary.
  • There seems to be an issue with the recording of donations from our club for the Foundation. Michael is following up. Renate has taken over the Elephant. He reminded everyone that this year the club would be matching donations to the Foundation 1 for 1 with points accumulated by the club.

Pretty Belinda:

Pretty Belinda was very well fed by happy Rotarians!

  • After spending a fascinating trip following the footsteps of Jock of the Bushveld, Patrick left his laptop in his room at Crocodile Bridge. It was found by a cleaner and returned to him.
  • Don’s daughter lives on a yacht in Carthegena and after being out for an evening came back to find the yacht gone. A search party found it across the bay, almost on some rocks. A worn rope had snapped and it drifted away. Luckily no damage.
  • Albie is happy that Elna has recovered from her setback last week and his Mum has just celebrated her 102nd birthday.,
  • Michael dived in the Red Sea on a recent visit to Egypt.
  • Ian – spent a great weekend in a lodge on the banks of the Crocodile river.
  • Erik – his daughter has been made the manager of Gum Treez.
  • Brian recounted a story of Nuggett (NO, No Nuggett!) After having their rabies innoculations, we put the dogs in the car. Nuggett jumped into the driver’s seat and put his paw on the automatic locking device. Result – dogs locked in, owners locked out – keys in the car! Luckily it was overcast and not too hot. We had to call for help to come home and get the spare keys.

Presently, I am trying to make friends outside of Facebook while applying the same principles.

Therefore, every day I go down on the street and tell the passers-by what I have eaten, how I feel, what I have done the night before and what I will do tomorrow night. Then I give them pictures of my family, my dog and me gardening and spending time in my pool. I also listen to their conversations and I tell them I love them.
And it works.

I already have 3 persons following me: 2 police officers and a psychiatrist.

Some interesting pub signs!
